I am looking to search through a word doc to see how many times the word "development" appears.  I can save it as text and search it elsewhere, too... so, what's the easiest way to do this?

I always use find and replace.  Its a little archaic, but who cares?  and there probably is a function that does this same thing.

You can just choose Replace under the edit menu.  Replace development with devel0pment and then replace all. Word will tell how many replacements it made.  Then just replace devel0pment with development and replace all.

In word 2003 -

you can go to:
edit - find (or ctl-F)
type in your word
Check the "highlight all items found in" checkbox
This will change the "find" button to a "find all"
When you click the "Find All" button it'll highlight the word in the document and tell you that "Word found X items matching this criteria"
