LD avoid PotC3.  Two was a huge disappointment, but Three shitatasic bad.  They tried to go 10x bigger and made it 100x worse

I think I remember reading something about Disney creating new sets and ships for PotC 2&3 before they had a script done and before they knew what kind of plot the movies were going to have.  I believe that they had to write the plot around the sets and not vice versa.  That could explain a lot.

I kid you not... I fell asleep when I watched it in the theater. Mind you, I did have a very early start that day so I was tired. In contrast; the day I watched transformers I started work at 6:30 am and when I walked out of the theatre that evening I felt like I'd just belted down a strong expresso with 2 Jolt cola chasers.

so, it's kind of amusing (and sad) that two of the big summer blockbusters turned out to be "too much crap shoveled into a bag two small to hold it" bad.  i haven't seen this one, but if it's getting compared to sm3, then i am now officially holding off buying it.  sm3 was all kinds of horrible.

it follows the matrix trilogy in perfect match-step.  one good movie followed by poorly written sequels which make them almost unwatchable.

Except that in the case of SM, the second movie was the high water mark.  Agree about PoTC, though - pretend the sequels never happened, much as with the Matrix.

X-Men 3 wasn't bad. It was just very, very average. Typical of Brett Ratner who makes cookie-cutter "everyone friendly" studio films. It's not terrible, but it's not good. Right smack in the middle as opposed to SM3 and PoTC 3 which both were terrible.

I'd probably hold X3 in a higher regard had the first two not been so damn good in the first place.

X3 was VASTLY worse than SM3 or PoTC3, in my opinion.  The latter were simply poorly written - X3 was a travesty.  Nothing like killing off half your main characters for no reason what so ever.

Yeah, I'd agree with that.

Shortly before the film was released, someone dropped a spoiler on me that:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Cyclops dies right in the beginning.

Yeah... if they deviate that much from the comics, they have nothing but my contempt.  It's amazingly hard to describe the level to which that's such a travesty.  It's like making an A-Team movie and killing off Hannibal right at the beginning of the movie, times 100.

I'm glad to see there are others that didn't like this movie. I got the second one through Netflix and didn't have time to watch the entire movie one night, so I stopped halfway through. At that point I was lost as to what was going on and wasn't enjoying it. The next evening I told my wife I had no interest in finishing it and so we didn't. We never even bothered with the third one.

My GF and I just watched it, and we agreed that it was uniformly awful.  We spent the whole thing wondering what the hell was going on, and as it turns out, 90% of what was going on didn't matter in the least.  They spent forever building up a ton of different plotlines, only to have none of them pan out to anything at all.  Hell, even the kraken from the second movie wound up as a footnote.

This is the definition of a movie imploding under its own weight.  I think we're going to watch PotC 1 just to cleanse our palates.  On the plus side, if I ever get a Blu-ray player, at least I only have to buy the first movie, and can skip the other two.

My wife and I just watched it too.

I was bored for about the first 30 minutes, not having any clue what was going on...

Then Johnny Depp finally showed up on the screen and showed that he was the only actor worth a damn in the whole movie. When he's on the screen, the movie is fun. Otherwise, the movie is duller than dirt.

Basically, they took the first movie, and stripped out the fantastic story, leaving a convoluted mess with only one saving grace.

They even cheaped out on the action. During the final battle

Spoiler for Hiden:
Maelstrom scene

10 pirate ships or so versus 200 or so colonial ships, and the final battle was ONE ship versus ONE ship.

Which made me question, what was the point of all that?

Oh, and "Nine pieces of Eight" hurts my brain.

It wasn't as bad as some of the other 'third' movies that came out recently. I liked Terminator 3 better. PotC 3 is better than Shrek 3, Spiderman 3, X-Men 3, the matrix 3...

*Shrug* I liked it (Pirates 3). Not as much as #1, which is one of my favourite action/adventure films, but #2/#3 I liked well enough. It was considerably better than SM3 and Shrek 3, both of which I consider terrible, with X3 a step even below those.

Pretty much in that exact same boat.

PoC #1 is one of my favorite films of all time. #2 and #3 were decent enough but nowhere near as good primarily because they seemed to lose that sense of swashbuckling adventure that was made the first one so refreshing.

I do think that SM3 was worse than X3 though.

Just saw POTC 3 this weekend. Man it was awful. We missed 2, but didn't realize it until after 3 started. My wife fell asleep and woke up towards the end proclaiming that this POS should have ended an hour ago.

What I never understand is how well the movie was done. You can tell the love and effort that went into creating a wonderful "Piratey" atmosphere, but then they ruin it with a horrendous story. If a fraction of the effort that went into effects went into the story it would have been great. I actually felt bad for all the people that worked on the movie, except for the story writers. Maybe its what the masses like. I just don't get why they do that.

When I was like 14 or so I tried reading "Return of the King", figuring I'd seen the cartoons so should be able to dive right in.  What a silly and naive thought that one was.  I ended up starting at The Hobbit, like I should have in the first place.

Mrs. Gratch wanted to see this, so we picked it up on PPV tonight.

I can say without hesitation that Pirates 3 is absolutely, positively, without any doubt whatsoever one of the worst movies I have ever seen.  It's not very often you see suck of that magnitude, but that was truly an epic fail on every single possible level.   The story was completely incomprehensible, the "action" was ridiculous, the characters (even Depp, who I loved in the first two) were mind-numbingly dull, and I think my eyes actually hurt from rolling them so much.  What an absolute turd and a complete waste of what was once a very promising franchise.

no, not implying anything about their quality, just that watching the last one totally destroys the first third of the first one.  and seeing how it ends destroys the last 2/3rds.

And some very nice ones at that.  But alas, even boobies were not enough to save the movie.

Do yourself a favor, and just get the screen captures off Mr. Skin or something.  I fast-forwarded through almost the whole movie, which someone else rented, and still feel ripped off.  I want that half hour back.
