Anyone else see this yet?  This movie was insane.  I'm not sure if I liked it or not.  I think it could have been better if less of the movie involved the Hostel and more of the movie involved the "Art Show."

Can you describe the story behind this movie?

I'm not going to see it, ever.  The previews all seem to glorify how the movie has all this horrific violence, but makes no mention of the basic premise besides people being tortured and killed.

I was just wondering if there's actually a purpose to this tripe.

I planned on seeing it over the weekend.  Its scoring pretty well (76%) on Rotten Tomatoes so it looks like most people are enjoying it.  Lions Gate is so hit or miss...but it sure is cool when they hit!

Interesting tidbit, did you know that ZeniMax (the company that owns Bethesda) has Jon Feltheimer, the Vice Chairman & CEO of Lions Gate Entertainment on their outside advisor board?  Cool eh?

My interest on this one is piqued.  Everything I'm hearing outside of the marketing hype is that the story is actually good and that the violence/gore isn't as bad as the ads would have you believe.

If I don't catch it in the theater (which is a distinct possibility the rate I've been seeing theatrical releases lately) it's already in my Netflix queue.

Violence is pretty graphic and you see a ton of naked breasts.
The Story (not in its entirety, but some spoilers):
Spoiler for Hiden:
basically these three guys are backpacking across Europe when they hear about this hostel in Solvakia.  When they get there they find lots of beautiful women who are basically jumping at the chance to sleep with them.  These women seduce the guys and then drug them and they end up in the strange torture place.  Story unfolds from there.

Missing a detail I think is important -

Spoiler for Hiden:
It turns out that the hostel is a front for a "business" of sorts, where $25,000 buys you the right to torture and kill a person in any way you see fit. The backpackers get captured and sold as part of this scheme.

That is a tough question.  I'd say Hostel wasnt quite as twisted as Strangeland, but I would say it was more graphic.

Sort of, but the gore in this movie is far worse than Saw or Saw 2.

That's kind of what I gathered from the trailer, which sort of gives this away.  I see no reason to have this movie in my life.  I like horror movies but man, this is kinda pointless, no?

i like gory horror movies. i like pretty much all horror movies. hell i liked house of 1000 corpses.  i kinda thought this one sucked.  the chicks were a class but the story sucked and i really didnt think there was as much gore in it as theyre hyping - nothing we havent seen before.

basically its 65 - 70% softcore porn and the remaining is halloween funhouse dr giggles violence.  id suggest youd be better served watching paid channels after 10 and rerenting your mildly violent texas chainsaw / saw / etc etc type movie.

Exploitation and torture films are among the select few that I won't watch, period. I have zero interest in this, even more so because it's written/directed by talentless hack Eli "Cabin Fever" Roth.

i myself thought the movie was pretty boring, and predictable.
it wasn't scary.
it wasn't overly gorey.

Eli Roth goes on my no watch list now.  just horrible.

since there is a decent ammount of boob shots in the movie...i'd give it
a half star.

frankly, i would have been disappointed renting this on dvd, much less paying $9 for it.

Ugh.

This was on my "To See" list (I'm a fan of the genre) but after seeing this, I'm out. I HATED Cabin Fever (as some long time GGers might remember) and I refuse to see anything made by that piece of shit Eli Roth.

I was gonna say that Roth comes up with his own ideas and Boll doesn't, but that's not true.  By my reckoning, Boll has one of the most gifted imaginations on the planet.  You'd have to in order to stray that far from the source material.

Roth gets the edge in that he's only raping his own intellectual property, where Boll is happily sodomizing IP that already has a fan base.

Of course, I'm not convinced Roth is a hack.  Sure, Cabin Fever wasn't the best movie around, but I didn't think it was that bad for a first film.  It's major problem was lack of focus, which is a common pitfall for fist-timers.  Particularly first-timers who make their own material.  I thought Cabin Fever showed enough spark that Roth has potential.  Whether he makes something of it remains to be seen.

Not quite.  I was gonna say that Roth comes up with his own ideas, but Boll does too.
I think Boll has spent the last few years buying almost every video game liscense he could to try to make them into movies.

I know.  The subsequent, "It takes alot of imagination to stray that far from the source material," was supposed to convey that, but I guess it didn't work.  I'll edit the original for clarity.

I agree...kinda.

I think this movie is exactly what the NC-17 rating was meant for.  When I think that both this and "Wedding Crashers" have R ratings I am amazed.  How does that "R" rating really help a parent?  Are those two movies so similar that a parent should lump them together?

It seems to me like saying someone is going between 35 and 120 miles per hour.....hummm that doesn't really help much.

Saw this finally.  It's way WAY beyond Saw and Saw II(which I liked).

No, there isn't tons of gore, but there are some choice bits(figuratively and literally).  It's a far better movie than Cabin Fever, in every way possible, so Roth is improving.

But somehow it was unsatisfying.  I felt it was going for a 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer' type of disturbing effect, but it doesn't resonate.  It could be because it is too slickly done of a movie, whereas Henry & its ilk always have a grungy 'this could be real' feel to them, usually due to their low budgets.  I always felt like I was watching a movie, always at arm's length away from the action. Sure, it's a severed arm's length, but still...

Plus certain elements have been used to better effect elsewhere.  For instance, there are some feral children in Hostel, well watch City of God for the definitive use of the feral child concept.

Oddly enough, this movie does have a moral to it.  Exploitation is its theme, imo, and it's ironic to me that an exploitation movie has that as its theme, hehe.
