It just today dawned on me that the "filter" symbol seen in Excel and other data processing software tools is a funnel. I thought it was just an abstract invented icon. My god.
The other one that comes to mind is the old symbol for the yellow pages, that hunched over abstract monster thing. Even after I realized it was supposed to be a walking hand I kept on wanting to see a hunched thing going the other direction.

You cannot begin to imagine how many games of the original Civilization I played before I realized that the Settler icon was the side-view of a wagon. To this day, the moment I got that is my most powerful "facepalm" moment.

I just wanted to add that a funnel makes no sense for representing a filter. A funnel doesn't filter anything; it funnels. It takes stuff, and then condenses it into a more compact stream of the same exact stuff. No stuff is filtered out. Replace your oil filter with an oil funnel and see how well it works.

Yes, but if you, say, took a giant bag of sand and poured it over a funnel into a bottle, only some of the sand would make it into the bottle. This is Microsoft, do you expect it to make sense? Maybe what it should really be is a colander button. That should be easy to make a little icon of

well, if someone was pouring sand and really large rocks into a funnel, it would filter out the really large rocks. until they blocked the funnel. at which point it would filter out everything.

What you can't see is that there is a coffee filter icon inside the funnel icon.

How about the save icon in Word. It's a floppy disk. What the hell is a floppy?! I have had 5 separate customers ask me for them in the past 4 weeks... One was a tech who was on his way to an onsite job that REQUIRED them...(It was a POS system)

How about the save icon in Word. It's a floppy disk. What the hell is a floppy?! In that same vein, the save icon in the game Might & Magic : Clash of Heroes is a picture of a CD/DVD disc. The game is available on the DS and as a downloadable game on PC, 360, and PSN, but not on a disc. Even if it were available on a disc, you wouldn't save to the disc, which makes the icon an even stranger choice.

I believe you're correct. There are no other icons that show heavy shading like the "Funnel" ... it could be that it is the little tiny holes that get lost in pixel hell.
