You are off base there, SL... you don't need an epidural to have pitocin.  One is a pain relief method, and one is a labor inducer.  There are plenty of women who are induced who don't get epidurals (which can stretch out labor too, as they block the impulse to push).  Induced labors are generally longer, so it isn't a case of getting people in and out faster, but of getting people IN faster/sooner/more on a schedule.

Just an aside - induced labor is by all accounts significantly more painful than uninduced labor. In normal labor, the body released hormones at different points in the process that help deal with the pain. With inducement a lot of those steps are skipped. Hence the epidurals. They aren't required, but highly recommended biggrin My wife went through five hours of induced labor before she couldn't take it anymore and got an epidural.

That's right.  Often docs give both...because the epi slows labor...so they give pitocin to speed it back up.

Good luck Tik smile

My memory must be fuzzy, but IIRC pitosin amps up the contractions and more contractions = more pain, hence the epidural prior to pitosin administration.

pitoCin.

Anyway.  No, you don't need an epidural.  It is optional.  My wife had pitocin and no epidural.  She is tough as fuck. smile

Edit: Ignoring my own good advice.

I won't be able to say it until after your inducement, so GOOD LUCK!
You won't need it, though, so GET SOME SLEEP is really all I need to say.

Mine was fuzzy to so I looked it up.  I found this part of what I found funny...

"Sometimes there are alternatives to using pitocin, and in most instances they should be tried before resorting to the use of pitocin.
To induce labor:

Walking
Nipple Stimulation
Intercourse (Only if the bag of water is intact.)
Enemas
Castor Oil "

Note:  These are not in order.

ok I added the last part smile  We all know the oil comes before the intercourse.

My wife was induced 3-weeks early because the amniotic fluid was low in her uterus and had they not done so, our daughter could have very well died.

Good luck with your baby. Ours went pretty smoothly and quickly once they began the process and administered the epiderral.

Good luck!  Hope everything goes well!  My wife is barely a week out from her due date, so we're in exactly the same boat.  Except for the scheduled inducement part.  I guess we're actually next door in the crap shoot boat.

Otto finally started sleeping through the night when he was like... I dunno... 14 months?

We had 3 or 4 awesome months, and then he hit the 18 month sleep regression... and he's been up a LOT the last three - four.  Ugh.

Bryn started doing 6-7 hours a night at about 6 weeks (thank goodness).

Congrats! Hope all goes smoothly.

We're due September 4th, but the wife has been measuring 2 weeks ahead consistently for the past 8 weeks. We have our 36 week ultrasound and that will really let us know if we have a big baby boy or if he is just sitting farther out since my wife is a petite lady. If he really is a big baby we may have to induce or a possible c-section, both of which make me nervous.

I'm jazzed as heck. I really can't wait. I don't about the coming lack of sleep, changing diapers or anything that might be a hassle. I am just super excited to be a dad.

Yeah, both my boys slept through the night at like 14 months.  I think boys are just more of a PITA than girls...at least as infants.

Agreed, Wesley started sleeping through the night at 4 months. This week she's hit a growth spurt so she's up once in the middle of the night, but she'll usually sleep for 8-10 hours a night nowadays.

I think my little girl was at around 5 weeks before she started going through the night consistently.  No training her, no timed cuddling, no nothing.  We are lucky.  I'm sure the next one will be a spawn of the devil.

Still waiting....lazy little kid.

I know the feeling. For various reasons (the way my wife was feeling, the cramping, the way the baby was so low) we had it in our minds that we'd have an early delivery. We're now +2 days past due date and my wife has barely dilated.

The doctor is going to induce on Sunday if we don't have her before then. The wait is agonizing though.

I described it to my wife as a combination of waiting for Christmas and anticipating the first day of a new job. Equal parts joy and terror.  icon_smile
