I visit McDonald's about once every two blue moons, but when I walked by one and saw their "Southern Style Chicken Sandwich" being advertised curiousity got the better of me.
I open the box and...it's bread and chicken. Plain bun, a breaded piece of chicken, and some pickle slices, served nuclear hot out of the microwave. I could barely pick it up.
There was no mayo or lettuce or...anything. It was just bread, chicken, and pickles. Oh, and the chicken piece was too big for the bun: a good one or two nuggets' worth of chicken was sticking out.
Is this (or at least, whatever McDonald's is trying to imitate) really a popular form of chicken sandwich in the south? I've got to be missing something. Is this just some misguided thing like "California style" meaning "put avacados in it?"

How good is the Chick-fil-A version? Is it popular? Oh, and how much is it at Chick-fil-A? This McD one was $3 for the standalone sandwich. |

Other than the fast food places, any chicken sandwich sold around here is going to come with lettuce and tomato. Not sure why that's called "Southern."
edit - the Chik-fil-a sandwich is really good. It's got to be at least $3, but it's the best chicken sandwich I've had from a fast food place. Still, I'd rather spend a few bucks more and get a fully-dressed chicken poboy from a real place.

Chik-fil-a is excellent (indeed I'll be eating there tonight) and they are usually enormously popular anywhere they open up. IIRC, Chik-fil-a originated in Georgia so I suppose it could be considered "Southern Style". I had one of McDonald's new "Southern Style" chicken biscuits and I thought it was pretty awful and a major step back from their old chicken biscuit. |

I'm not southern, but I assumed it had to do with the seasoning of the breading. Like if you had used Italian breading/seasoning and this this seasoning somehow warrants a smaller sandwich with less stuff that costs an extra buck. As a breakfast biscuit, the southern chicken was pretty good but I only got one because of a buy one get one coupon. I'd never pay three bucks for a tiny breakfast sandwich like that.
...We have a chick-fil-a in Rochester Michigan. I every time I've been out that direction I've looked for it just to see what all the hub bub is about. That thing is well, well hidden.

Well Im southern. I bought that McYD 'southern chicken' sandwich ONE time. What a damn ripoff. As the OT said its bread and a chicken breast for like $5. Dont waste your money. Go to Zaxbys or Chic-fil-A .
