Last night while chatting with my league teammates we started talking about pool hall social dynamics and the interesting cast of characters we run into each week. We also talked a bit about the types of characters we appear to be as well. Two of my teammates ride Harleys and live out in the more rural areas of Phoenix in the east valley (Apache Junction), one was once a member of the Hell's Angels back in his "earlier days", one of my teammates is currently in jail for his second DUI (actually, I think he's out at the moment awaiting a court date but his license is still suspended and his car is at the impound lot), one is a younger guy who drinks a fair bit but works most evenings and rarely makes it to our matches, and one teammate is Moliere's dad. We're certainly an interesting blend of folks, and I seem to fit the "yuppie D.I.N.K" stereotype (Dual Income No Kids), but it seems the team has already developed somewhat of a nickname for me. While I had assumed it would be something along the "yuppie" lines, instead they've started calling me "Beach Boy." In part because I always show up in cargo shorts and flip flops, but also because I actually was somewhat of an East Coast beach boy in New Jersey. But they made it clear that I'm not a "d00d California surfer beach boy" but more a "New Jersey drink too much and fight people on the boardwalk" kind.

So at the moment it seems that I'm the East Coast "Beach Boy." As usual, nicknames are never selected, they're bestowed.
