There was a trailer that someone posted here about 4-5 years ago that was a Japanese action movie that looked like Final Fantasy -meets-Crimson Skies. They didn't have any subtitles and no one knew what the movie was actually about. I want to find this movie, and watch it (hopefully with dub or subtitles). Your help is much appreciated.

First thing that came to my mind was Sucker Punch but that's not even out yet.

By action movie I'm taking it you're referring to live action as opposed to anime - correct? Cashern came to mind for me too, but somehow I believe you might be thinking of the The Great Yokai War. The latter was created to be a children's movie, but it's actually too scary for most preteens - sort of has a Terry Gilliam feel to it. Other than some of the sets and costumes though, I don't see much of a similarity with either to Crimson Skies. Either way, if you have an interest in Japanese cinema both are worth your while.

It was all CGI, and I recall someone saying they had no idea what movie it was, but they wanted to watch it.
It had its own thread here.

been looking online for your answer Wiki has a list of CGI films made, the list is in alphabetical order, has country of origin and year made, surprisingly there are only less than a dozen Japanese CGI films on the list, most are USA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computer-animated_filmshow about Vexille(Bekushiru 2077 Nihon sakoku)?,but that was made in 2007....so if its 4-5 years ago, maybe not your film..and also, looking at screenshots from that film,it looks more normal(but great looking)animation rather than full on CGI(as in Pixar or the FF movies CGI)..wiki page says its CGI however looking at the Vexille pics,i have to say i want to see that now...thanks Purge

It had its own thread here. Hmm...CGI hey. Was it possibly the Appleseed remake you're thinking of. That released about 6 years ago and a sequel Ex-machina has been released since. Both are definitely worth watching. Here's a picture of the DVD cover:

OK, well I'll throw out the obvious just to get them out of the way - Final Fantasy Advent children (completely CGI) and The Last Exile (anime with some excellent blended CGI.) I'm sure you seen both of those, but thought I'd mention them, since they both fit the description of Final Fantasy + Crimson Skies quite well. [Edit] Wait - I had a brain flash. Are you by chance referring to John Woo's 2003 CGI film Ark? It was South Korean, not Japanese, but I believe it had some connection to Final Fantasy.

I don't remember much of Ark -late, late night viewing sometime back in 2004- but I remember being thankful while watching Appleseed Ex-machina that John Woo had learned from some of his mistakes.

Let me rephrase the description - I recall some flying ships that were defending a giant futuristic city, the CGI made us all go ooooooo, but it had no english. I'm not entirely sure if it was Japanese either... it may have been Korean. It was not advent children, nor was it a brand anyone recognized. I wish I could find the thread, but we're talking about hundreds of thousands of posts. Hell, my own contribution to the thread may have been something like "neat!" so going through my 11K of posts would be an exercise in futility. Plus it would give me a real perspective on who I was and who I've become- I don't think I'm strong enough to face that kind of criticism from myself.

From what you describe it could have just been a CGI scene from a live action film. Whatever it was, I'm guessing it never got a NA release.

It wasn't live action, but Sky Captain would be close. This was very "ooo". I also suspect it isn't on this board as my oldest posts date back to 2005. Ron, do we have a copy of the old msg board?

Grrr. This will be something that will bug me. A Lot.

I love a riddle. If it helps, you might comb this exhaustive Wikipedia listing of all Japanese made films; the list on the right there lets you browse by specific year: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Japan*If you can remember even a single word from the title, or whether it was a one word title or a multi-word title, that would improve the odds of finding it. Steamboy (2004) probably isn't it, but it sounds like something I should've seen (w/ Patrick Stewart doing some voicework): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy#Plot_summaryAnd Howl's Moving Castle (also 2004) mentions some flying combat aircraft, zeppelins and stuff, and seems like another one I should try to see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howl%27s_Moving_Castle_%28film%29#PlotAnd I assume it's not "Adulterous Wife's Dirty Afternoon" or "Big Tit Sisters: Blow Through the Valley"

Yup, the description of big ships defending a futuristic city is reminiscent of a number of Otomo's works - Metropolis comes to mind too. The problem, is that Steamboy and everything else he's done recently is anime blended with CGI. BTW I wouldn't advise many to bother with Steamboy; not a very good anime IMO.
