are you asking what is 'We can remember it for you wholesale'? If so, that would be the story Total Recall is based on.
I find the Dick Wholesale title of the pdf funny though.

The file name made me think it was possibly some kind of fan fiction, and not the kind I'd want to open at work.

We Can Remember It For You Wholesale is available in public domain and the short story is truly a short story. Easily finishable in about 30 minutes. That link is not a very good PDF, but it works. Just take the 30 minutes and form your own opinion. thanks for that,i just read it,started off good but got a bit odd towards the end

Given the caveats that a) I was a big fan of the original, b) I am kind of desperate for new sci-fi movies, c) Colin Farrell appears shirtless for a good 5 minutes, and d) I love Kate Beckinsale in pretty much every movie (especially when she gets to fight), I give the new version a solid thumbs up for mindless sci-fi fun.
As you probably heard, they ditched the Mars plotline and kept it on a futuristic/dystopian Earth where all that's left of the planet is Australia and Britain. The main premise follows the original movie pretty closely (bored guy has action packed dreams, goes to try out Rekall to implant memories, things go wrong, you may or may not wonder whether or not it's real or memorex, there's a rebellion, etc etc). They've stuck with most of the same character names, and many of the key scenes/shots are either direct nods to the original, or at least reminiscent, so that's really nice for fans. As long as you aren't a die hard "it has to be the same" type of fan, I think in general if you liked the original, you'll like this one as well. In some ways it's as much an homage to the original as it is a reboot/remake.
The effects, particularly the zoomed out cityscape ones, are all really fantastic, reminsicent of Blade Runner and some of the new Star Wars movie cities. They also apparently stole the clones from Attack of the Clones just for good measure. I think if you peer into the Tomatoes reviews, even the negative ones liked the effects. There are a lot of fight scenes (maybe too many) and a lot of shooting and exploding as you would expect. Personally I might have liked a little more in terms of the dream vs. reality themes, but that might have felt really weak up against recent fare like Inception. The one thing I was most happy with was extended/better use of Kate Beckinsale (no surprise given the director); I've always been bummed once Sharon Stone (in the same role) exits the original.
They definitely don't try to copy the memorable one-liners, but that's probably a good thing for a modern movie. Still I couldn't help quoting from the original in my head throughout the movie, oh well!

Australia and Britain?,i can understand Australia i guess, but Britain is tiny...we are already full up,i hate to see what it would be like being that we are one of two places on earth to be I watched The Daily Show the other night(i dunno,Friday perhaps),and Jessica Biel was on it and she said it wasn't a reboot/remake of the original film, but more of a faithful adaptation of the short story(that Theo linked to)...i hope the end isn't the same as the book,as that was bonkers I am currently reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep(Blade Runner),and this one has started off weird but got me wondering if it will end great

That was tired, vanilla bullshit. Why is it illegal to make a film that has fun with its premise and characters? Everything was silver and gray and the emotions ran the gamut from blank to blank. One thing that film definitely needed were some more lens flares. They must have had a $20 million budget for flares. JJ Abrams would have found them ridiculous. All in all, that was just such a bland and pointless remake that I find hard to believe hews much closer to the story than the first film did. Arnie's version wipes the floor with this one.

Just take the 30 minutes and form your own opinion. I was going to read it but this stinging commentary from a reviewer at Barnes & Noble turned me off - Meh...This was poorly written but what can i say for only twenty three pages of words. Okay plot not the best not the worst bok out there. Not worth paying for though.

While i agree it's not mega great,it is however more interesting to read than anything else, actually it may give you a more favoured look for the movie/s I am currently about 20 pages away from the end of 'Do Andoids Dream Of Electric Sleep?' and while there are a few things associated with the Blade Runner movie,it could very well be a sequel if you changed the names about(Roy,Pris etc),it's a really good read(although it does still have some crazy shit in it)..fans of BladeRunner though i think would really like it

I thought DADoES was better than the movie, but still kinda dull. I think it would have been a better book if it had followed the other inspector.

This just came out on video.
This was surprisingly good. I don't see the huge reason to use the same name as the Arnold version since the story is 90% different but it was much better than I expected.

I agree. I just saw this and was very impressed. it was a great popcorn movie, and I'm pleased that they didn't just remake Arnold's version. And holy sh!t is Kate a badass! I wish they kept the "why are you sweating?" part instead of using tears, however.

just saw this on blu and thought it was fun. Wish Davy Jones was in it a bit more, and had some trouble accepting Walt could take on Bullseye on a fight. Wish there was a bit more fighting between Selene and Mary Camden. Sulu looked odd as a blonde. Awesome nod to the original, 'two weeks!'

The original was on SyFy after Defiance the other day,not seen it for some time still a great film and was quite surprised how well it held up The opening credits with the red reminded me of my one failed attempt to pirate a video cassette from the rental store(one i should mention in this thread) For some reason we had two(Gigantic) VHS recorders in the house for a limited time, and i took my chance to see if i could 'pirate',the result? the block on the rental made it all warped when i tried watching the copy.. the red was still very vivid in the opening credits though As for this version,i am sure its due on Sky Movies soon and i will catch it then, when it was out on DVD,Sky store had it available for rent, they had the directors cut on there,so hopefully it will be that version when its on their movie channel 97 Changes:
- 51 extended scenes in the Extended Director's Cut - 8 extended scenes in the Theatrical Version - 22 alternative shots - 7 alternatively arranged scenes - 8 altered dialogues - 1 changed scene
