I've read the original story - it's not really suited for a feature length movie. It has kind of a funny twist at the end, but it's pretty short and low on action.

Damn, why can't Hollywood make anything original anymore? I mean, there are tons of awesome novels to make movies out of these days. I haven't even seen Total Recall yet. They can't remake it.
I want to see Snow Crash made into a movie. I want to see Jennifer Government made into a movie. There was an old Ben Bova novel that I read once that seemed like it would make a good movie. It was about a society that used a holodeck-like box to solve any disputes by fighting in them to relieve stress, claiming it was safe until someone dies from it.

Anyways, its a weird move I think to make this movie again, so soon, and considering its still a pretty good movie. I predict it will not be anything special

re: CeeKay's post Seriously though - Hollywood needs some new ideas, stat! You know how in the Star Trek TNG episodes the crew would play out stories in the holodeck? I kept wondering why they didn't play out original stories from their own century and how it was unrealistic for them to keep re-hashing stories from the 20th century. With all these remakes it doesn't seem so unrealistic anymore.

I think attempting to remake any Paul Verhoeven-directed film (including this and Robocop and Starship Troopers) is folly. The guy, for better and sometimes worse, had his own unique style and I just am convinced any remake attempt would be a clumsy, wooden thing. I did see Total Recall when it released, and while it was some reasonably cheesy fun, his earlier Robocop (1987) remains for me my favorite of his English-language films. From what I read, this is no longer set on Mars, right? And I agree. I don't know why Hollywood isn't chasing new ideas or making films from unfilmed novels/short stories instead of now apparently trying to remake everything that came out during the 1980s and 1990s. It's like Hollywood is eating its own poop , metaphorically speaking. "Why should I cook something new, when I can just keep pooping out the same ideas and eating them all over again?" Hollywood said.

It could be a cultural thing - I mean, taking us back to the good old days were things didn't look so bleak out in the world?
The types of movies being made often reflects the times we are in, and this could be seen as a wanting to go back to the 80's?

If that's the case, bud, GOD HELP US ALL! 1989 (age 23-24) was a memorable year for me but most of that decade I'd rather forget, even if lots of the movies were awesome. Hey, from SuperHeroHype, glimpses of Total Recall's cops at Comic-Con: http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/167945-sdcc-total-recall-reveals-its-futuristic-police-forceThe futuristic police of Len Wiseman's upcoming remake of Total Recall have hit the streets of Comic-Con. The below vehicle has been set up across the street from the convention center, accompanied by two apparently robotic law enforcement officers. Years ago I would have laughed at this stuff, but considering we have defense contractors working on "autonomous helicopters/aircraft" and various groups testing "autonomous taxis" and the like (seen some coverage by Popular Mechanics and the like), I don't see us being too far from this kind of thing.

Kind of an interesting concept for a remake. This will be hardly closer to the original source (given that it is just a short story with a twist and no action), so really an adaptation of an adaptation.

original was full of fun for its time. I wonder if they are going to make this one more 'dramatic'? It was filmed in Toronto - there was a news article here with a picture of Colin F driving a 'hover' car downtown and causing all sorts of traffic nightmares etc.

Good, solid trailer. The latest CGI sure makes Mars looks pretty. My only qualm is Colin Farrell. He's just no Schwarzenegger and he comes across as a bland lead. Other than that, I think I'll be checking it out.

Did they show Mars at all in the trailer? It looked to me like it all took place on earth. Makes me wonder if perhaps only the basics of the story are the same (i.e. implanted memories -> spy).

I think it looks fine, it's just, if they're making it to be more true to the source material, how much of today's audience even knows of the Philip K. Dick short novelette, much less ever read it? We're not talking The Hunger Games here. There's not some giant mass of people starving for an adaption of "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." While I think it's amusing to think of Kate Beckinsale (the director's wife, but that's totally a coincidence! ) as an older (!) villainness vs. Jessica Biel as the heroine, the casting just seems strange to me. Colin Farrell? Of course Arnie in the role seemed ludicrous to me in 1990 and I remember much of the audience laughing at sequences that weren't supposed to be funny. I think maybe I'd prefer if some cable network took a stab at the material as a serious, limited mini-series type adaptation. Then you might see some sort of interesting, thoughtful adaptation. Heck I'd have liked to see a Chris Nolan's take on something like this, then perhaps there'd be some imagination involved rather than pushing to inflate it as summer blockbuster material. I've seen Len Wiseman's stuff enough (the last Die Hard, and two Underworld films) to know he's not likely going to do something memorable. But it will have bullets, babes, stunts, guns and lots of slo-mo of babes dodging bullets. This we know will be true.
