Happy Birthday, Marine Corps!

Don't ask me how I can remember the date of the founding of the Marine Corps.  I've never been a Marine - I did try to join the Air Force when I was 19, but they weren't taking diabetics.  Somehow though, the date stuck in my mind, go figure...

So Happy B-day, USMC!  Hoo-rah!

Speaking of the marines...

I decided to watch Generation Kill when it was on HBO a few months ago. I had read the book beforehand and thought it was a great read, so I definitely wanted to see the series. After having been wowed by it I realized that most of my reading on military history has been on the army, air force, or navy and I knew almost nothing about the marines except for their battles during WW2.

So I picked up "One Bullet Away" by Lt. Nathaniel Fick, which was his perception of the events in Generation Kill which got me intrigued as to how the modern Corps operates today. That got me started on "No True Glory" by Bing West, which is an account of the Battle of Fallujah, and now I'm on "The Strongest Tribe" another book of his talking about Iraq.

And to adorn their uniforms, God gave them badges. And He gave them cords. And He gave them ribbons… and patches… and stars… and bells. He gave them emblems… and crests… and all sorts of shiny things that glittered… and devices that dangled. When you’re God, you tend to get carried away in a big way.

And on the 7th day, as you know, God rested. And on the 8th day at 0530, God looked down upon the earth and was not happy.

GOD WAS NOT HAPPY!

So He thought about His labors, and in His infinite wisdom, God created a divine creature and this He called a Marine. And these Marines whom God created in His own image, were to be of the air, the land, and the sea. And these He gave many wonderful uniforms.

He gave them practical, fighting uniforms, so that they could wage war against the forces of Satan and evil.

He gave them service uniforms for their daily work and training, that they might be sharp and ready.

And He gave them evening and dress uniforms. Sharp, stylish, handsome things, so they might score with the ladies on Saturday night, and impress the hell outta everybody!

And at the end of the 8th day, God looked down upon the earth, and saw that it was good. But was God happy? No!

GOD WAS STILL NOT HAPPY!

Because in the course of His labors, He had forgotten one thing… He did not have a Marine uniform! But He thought about it, and thought about it, and finally satisfied Himself in knowing that, well, not everybody can be a Marine…

It was requested (ordered) that I attend the Cake cutting ceremony in San Francisco today at the Marine's Memorial Club.  I was awarded the purple heart and some other award that I don't deserve.  Anyways, Semper Fidelis.

My one regret in life is that I never served in my nation's military. I was one step away from a US Navy commission when I graduated University but chickened out at the last minute.

Yeah, I tried getting into the Naval and Air Force Academies after high school, but couldn't get the Congressional nomination. That's the problem with growing up near what was then Fort Ord, the DLI and the Naval Post Graduate School. Too many candidates from military families.

I don't know what's saddest.  That this thread was created by a non-Marine, is being bumped by an Air Force brat, or that it hasn't been touched in three years.

Semper Fi to my GT friends and fellow service members.  I wore my USMC uniform today (with permission of course) while training my Ranger Battalion class. Just a small way for me to honor the Corps and to stir up some rivalry.

Of the 5 of us shown, only 2 of us remain as of 2011 due to combat ops
So tonight I'll try and drink three bud lights (past my two drink tolerance) in honor of my friends.

Although in UK,i have the same regrets,i wanted to join the Army like my Father(well kind of he was in the Territorial Army and stationed in Germany for a time in the late 70s early 80s),and Grandfather(WWII) had,but got told that my health would not let me(I am deaf in one ear),so i never even attempted it...I sometimes think i should of tried to blag my way in,but i guess it could of lead to either me or team getting hurt or killed,which wouldn't be a good thing to have over me(that is if i hadn't of been the one killed)

Unfortunately I did not. I was I invited to go to one in Atlanta, GA but my heart probably couldn't take it so I declined.  Pretty sure I'll go next year
