I'm not convinced it'll be the best movie ever. I'm just also not convinced your argument made any sense.

I really like the "Out of this World" quality found in the few Tales of the Green Lantern Corps stories I've read. I should pick up a larger PB collection sometime. I doubt this movie will capture that well, but it would be cool if they can at least give us a glimpse here and there instead of primarily focusing on the ring making giant green guns and boxing gloves.

I think the key is whether the casual fan gets into this. imho, the casual fan knows enough about Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, and a few other iconic comic book characters. I know the name Hal Jordan, and I remember an animated Green Lantern as a kid and the ring doing crazy things but I really can't remember anything beyond that -- not the origin story or characters or anything. Of course, if the film's origin portion does its job I guess it won't matter but you do have to convince people who don't live and breathe Green Lantern to want to get to the theater too. My only concern from the trailers is that sooooooo much of the film is CGI. Obviously, Avatar showed you can do an all-CGI film and have historic B.O. But I've seen a lot of CGI-heavy films that never really get you to care about any character or story going on in the film. And really, my favorite scenes in the Iron Man movies were the ones with "real" costumes on, not the overblown CGI-bot-battles. I'll go see GL if there are any characters or story worth caring bout but if it's just 2 hours of green CGI and Ryan Reynolds' abs and smirk, I won't bother -- just like I skipped both Hulk movies in theaters. Hopefully GL will be something more fun.

I agree with you, Blackjack. I, too, am curious as to how the film will appeal to casual fans. I never read superhero comic books as a kid, although I did watch a large number of comic-based cartoons and television shows. As an adult I've become quite the fan of comic book and superhero films, despite not always knowing much about the featured superhero or characters. In anticipation of films based upon a specific comic mythos I may be unfamiliar with I'll go online to sites such as Wikipedia in order to get an abbreviated background on characters and the world they inhabit.
Some films have been based on material I have read and am familiar with (Watchmen for example), but others such as Ironman required me to read up on the character(s) and his/their backgrounds or comic history. Before some of the recent Marvel films I knew little about The Avengers but now cannot wait for the upcoming film. Captain America is another character I am unfamiliar with but have learned a great deal in preparing to see the movie. In a way these films are a nice catalyst for getting casual fans like myself more interested in the stories and characters to the point of reading up on them and sometimes even investing in some of the print material.
The first few trailers of Green Lantern worried me as they seemed more like a comedic take on the story comparable to The Green Hornet, but subsequent trailers have made me more and more interested in the film. I'm beginning to like Ryan Reynolds and from what I've seen he seems to be moving past the slapstick, nonsensical comedy he's done in the past and looks to be taking the role quite seriously. I have some concerns on the CGI quality and incorporation of Lantern's powers, but overall it looks like it could do a far better job with "the evil force coming to engulf the planet" storyline than Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Right now I am planning to see the film barring overly negative reviews. And I also plan to read more about the character and his comic history to be better prepared for what I will see on screen. Some have expressed concern over an alleged saturation of the film market with superhero movies, but I welcome these films as they've broadened my knowledge base and continue to successfully entertain.

Yikes! The trailer started out looking really good then ... Ryan Reynolds? It's The Fantastic Four all over again except it's The Fantastic Van Wilder. Was he tho only guy available? I'd rather see Sheldon from Big Bang Theory than Reynolds.

It's really interesting to me how the trailers/previews have changed for Green Lantern - the early previews were very cheesy/hammy to me, and looked like a very light hearted (and not overly good) movie. The later trailers have had much more serious tones and actually look quite good to me. I'm curious to see how the actual movie turns out.

That's what so frustrating about the guy. He has the acting chops to really steal a film...WHEN he's invested in the movie. But he takes so many damn movies just to keep his head above water when it comes to debt that those times when he's actually acting are few and far between.

Wow even IGN bashed this one and they usually love the big Comic Book movies. They compared it to Jonah Hex and really had nothing nice to say about the movie, other than that Ryan Reynolds wasn't bad.
