Who do folks here think was/is the greatest, most entertaining lead singer of a rock band? For me, even in a field that has Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Mick Jagger, there can be only one:
Freddie Mercury

As this is purely and absolutely subjective, I don't know that we should put guidelines on "greatness". I think you'd have to define it for yourself--is it talent? is it the way that you feel while listening/watching them perform? The list is potentially endless. Go with your gut, I say.

Tough to narrow it down to just one, so I'll throw out a few that spring immediately to mind:
- Freddy Mercury - David Bowie (especially Ziggy Stardust era) - Ogre (Skinny Puppy) - Axl Rose - Peter Murphy

Freddie Mercury Good call. Whatever that current commercial is that uses "I Want To Break Free" has got me listening to Queen again - particularly their live shows - and he is a brilliant frontman. His musical/vocal talent and undeniable showmanship just put him a notch above just about everyone else.

If you are talking about showmanship, I dunno. I guess Freddie was pretty good but I never went to a Queen concert. Then again I never went to any concerts but Midnight Oil and Van Hagar. From that vast pool of experience I would say Peter Garrett is the greatest frontman in rock and roll. Best "lead singer" in terms of voice and persona and songwriting ability all wrapped together would IMO be John Lennon. But I dunno how he rates as a "frontman." I bet he tore 'em up at the Cavern way back when, though.

David St. Hubbins. Good call. Can't get enough of the Tap TAP INTO AMERICA!!! How surreal would a David St. Hubbins/Freddie Mercury collaboration be?

(Quick, name me ANYONE else in Blondie)
And I'm estatic no one has said Bono yet. They are contemplating renaming the Morrison Effect courtesy of him.

Jim Morrison! TOTALLY agree. He pushed everything to the absolute limit. (especially his liver ) He was a fantastically charismatic showman. I always liked David Lee Roth too, when he was with Van Halen.

Well in terms of pure rock and roll, I gotta go with Morrison whipping it out in Florida. The guy was a self indulgent tool, but certainly a great 'frontman'. Musical ability not withstanding.

Anyone who saw Live Aid knows that Queen blew every other band off the stage.
Uh, I didn't mean the way it sounded
