Universal and Gore Verbinski are going into "Bioshock."

Studio has signed a deal to turn last year's hit videogame, which won numerous awards and sold more than 2 million units worldwide, into a film.

The "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmer is attached to direct and produce. "Aviator" scribe John Logan is in talks to pen the screenplay.

"Bioshock" publisher Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the pic. It's believed to be the biggest videogame-to-movie deal since 2005, when U and Fox signed onto the since aborted "Halo" pic, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%.

HAHAHA its not Uwe Boll HAHAHAH.wwoooooooo.

This could work out better since Bioshock is a property that's better suited to convey a message, whereas Pirates was a fun adventure flick that was shoehorned to tell some kind of big message.

So it'll have an all-star cast, be three hours long and boring?

Ask A Ninja's review of POTC 2 remains one of the highlights of the Internet.

"This film needed a lot more Gore, and a lot less Verbinksi."

The big question is, who plays Andrew Ryan?

Val Kilmer.

Not really, but let's speculate!

why the, what seems to me at least to be, jaded sceptism? While you may not like Pirates, Gore V. is at least an accomplished craftsman, and not a hack like some other well known directors (Uwe?).

I for one is excited, since I loved the story, and the idea of making it into a movie seems great to me.

Yeah, I think this has potential as far as game adaptations go.  Verbinski has a mixed track record (I liked The Ring and the first Pirates movie a lot) and is good with visuals.  I'm not so hot on John August's track record but it could be worse.

Im not sure why theres so much Verbinski hate here.  While I didnt think the 2nd and 3rd Pirates movies were as good as the first, I still enjoyed them and I thought the 1st one was awesome.  I think this is going to suprise you all and be a great movie and thus set the standard for game to movie conversions for the next 10 years.  of course considering that most game to movie conversions are absolute crap ( thank you Uwe! )  theres a low bar to start with

it's a movie based on a video game so it's best to go in with jaded skepticism and be pleasantly surprised instead of great optimism only to have your hopes smashed like a splicer taking on a Big Daddy in hand to hand combat.

and for the record, I loved all of Gore's PotC movies-  it's just the fact that it's a video game property is making me wary.

Well hopefully this will be the first video game movie to break the mold and from now on video game movies will be as good and fun as comic book movies have become.

At first I was excited to hear that one of my all time favorite games will be made into a movie.  But the more I thought about it the more I'm convinced they won't pull it off. The game was  clearly action filled but the real underlying theme I got from the game was the wonder of how a group of people sought to turn away from society and build a utopia. A utopia based on the premise that man should do what he likes. The problem in the Bioshock world was when everyone did what they liked, well lets just the their future was pre ordained.

One of the themes in Bioshock was pulled from Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand's excellent book The Fountainhead, went horribly wrong in the Cary Cooper movie version. I have a feeling the movie version of Bioshock will go down that same road.

and it's on hold.  Can't blame them when the budget hit's 160 million, but they had to figure that this movie would be costly anyways.

The Bioshock movie gets a new director in the form of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo...the guy from 28 Weeks Later.

Quote
"28 Weeks Later" helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is in talks to direct "Bioshock," the Universal Pictures adaptation of the Take-Two Interactive videogame.

Verbinski opted out of directing because the studio's budget plan for the film has been revamped to lense abroad in order to take advantage of tax credits and favorable exchange rates. Verbinski couldn't commit to an overseas shoot because he is locked into directing the Paramount animated film "Rango," with the title character voiced by his "Pirates of the Caribbean" cohort Johnny Depp.

Fresnadillo directed the 2001 Spanish thriller "Intacto," and made his Hollywood breakthrough with "28 Weeks Later."

God I hope they just take the game and CTRL-C, CTRL-V for the movie.   If they tinker with it and make it a game adaptation it's gonna suck.

With the level of suckage that goes into making movies based on games, I'm afraid this one has no chance. I watched Max Payne over the weekend and it was dreadful.
