In case anyone wants it reassembled.  Sorry for the long posts.  I'm pulling a cached page at a time.  If this violates any rules about post size I'll happily yank it.  I'm also trying to clean the formatting as I go.

What I'd suggest: Start a new thread.  Find your post from here, cut and paste it to the new thread.  Update, as these caches are not current to  say the least.

This is page 1.

Godzilla Blitz
Along the lines of the "Games Completed in 2004", this is a "Books Read in 2004" thread. Claim a spot and list up the books you finish in 2004. Be sure to update your list when you finish a new book.

The thread is now open for general discussion, questions, comments on reader lists, impressions on books newly completed, etc.

If you missed the initial listing period and would still like to add a list of books, by all means feel free.

This isn't really a competition to see who reads the most books in a year, but rather as a way to learn a bit more about other GG'ers, as a way to spark discussion about books, and as a resource for GG'ers to find books they might be interested in reading.

It's up to each GG'er to decide on their own what constitutes "reading a book". For me, I have two very little kids, so I probably read a dozen books a day, none of which is longer than 100 words. I won't be counting those. However, I will be counting some easy Japanese novels that I work through occasionally; I feel like I've "read a book" after I finish one of those.

Lastly, I'm very much making all this up as I go along. If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve things, please feel free to post them here or email me.

Well, I just finished Prisoner of Azkaban.

I was pleased - not just with the book, but with the series. I was afraid, after the first two, that the author was going to become too formulaic, but she really stepped into a different line with Prisoner. There was more depth, she actually pulled off the bad guy/good guy switch that she futzed with in the last two, and she added story elements that will tie the series together. It looks like it won't just be seven unrelated adventures with the same characters, but an actual continuing story arc - fantastic!

The Sword of Shannara(Brooks) [third or forth time] - I have a thing where I collect several books by the same author and once I get enough new books by them I work my way through all of their work starting at the begining each time.

The Elfstones of Shannara(Brooks) - This is taking forever, I think I have finally burned myself out on Fantasy.

Dungeons and Dreamers - The Rise of Computer Game Culture From Geek to Chic (King & Borland) - Reading books like this and Kent's The Ultimate History of Video Games is like taking a ride down memory lane. Both books mentioned were very good trips.

Angels & Demons (Brown) - I think it was triggercut who tried this and didn't like it. I put it off for a long time but finally read it. I loved it, finished it in just 3 days reading on breaks and lunch at work. I even sat in my car after work to finish one section and ended up finishing the rest at 5 AM once I got home. Looking forwared to the Da Vinci Code now.

Reading:

The Sandman - Preludes & Nocturnes(Gaiman) - So far this really isn't my cup of tea. I liked American Gods and wanted to see what the whole graphic novel thing was about so I chose Gaimans Sandman series. I doubt I will go any farther into the series after reading the first collection.

On Tap:

We'll have to start a new thread when this one gets locked. We'll give people a week or so to copy/paste their lists from this thread. How to Brew - John Palmer - *** - Good reference book to have around, but the info isn't anything you can't get on the internet.

The Sudbury Valley Experience - *** - This book has essays describing The Sudbury Valley School. Like the previous book, much of it can be found on the internet, but it's nice to carry around. It does offer a good analysis of the philisophical issues facing the current education system.

So far I must admit that I have thoroughly enjoyed the Tales of Alvin Maker series by Orson Scott Card.

 Redliners by David Drake is a novel about soldiers suffering combat fatigue. The powers that be decide that the best way to cure them is to have them safeguard colonists on a planet with hostile flora and fauna. The action is non-stop with great characters. There isn't much of a plot, but that's like going to watch an action movie and expecting a drama.

Final score: 3 stars - fast moving action and great characters make for entertaining reading.

Cryptonomicon - **** stars

Quite an entertaining and interesting read. Stephenson has accomplished quite a lot in this book, which was surprisingly good.

Stephenson has an extremely odd writing style. Somehow he manages to both harm his storytelling and help it, all at the same time. His use of present tense is disorienting, particularly when he jumps back and forth in time eras with little or no demarcation to warn the reader this has taken place. This, plus the surprising topic of WWII Cryptography combined with modern day data havens, makes for a slow-starting book that is hard to get into.

And yet even when I got into it, I found myself frequently putting it down. It certainly was NOT one of those "Must read the entire thing in one night" novels. Indeed I never once even had the inclination to do so. But every time I put it down, I'd pick it back up again. It took me a month to soldier through, but somehow by the end of the book I didn't feel particularly as though I was soldiering anymore. Somewhere along the way it turned into a pleasant read.

 Finally finished Fellowship of the Ring. I may get killed for this, but I gotta tell ya, I ended up liking the movie better. Tolkien created an absolutely amazing living world, but the book has some pacing issues for me. This is a march to destroy the most dangerous item in creation, not a stroll through Middle Earth. And I'm not thrilled with Sarumon only making an appearance via a re-told dialogue. It's hard to believe him as a dangerous foe when he doesn't even show up. Maybe if I had read the book before seeing the movie, I would feel differently. Still, a good read, and I'm happy to plunge into the Two Towers.

Actually, I've never finished the book, despite making it a couple hundred pages or so into the thing on three separate attmepts. I always get stuck in that damn forest.  An Oblique Approach - David Drake - SF - Aliens invade ancient earth yet again [Wink] This is actually part one of a series (didn't realized it at the time), and things are set up for a great epic adventure I think. Heh DD just loves great commanders with companion crystals/rings/helmets giving advice [Wink]

The Starfarers - Poul Anderson - SF - Was a really great read and interesting stuff. Covers an epic level span of time, has some great ideas in it. All in all a great hard SciFi read. (well at least I think it's hard SF!)

The Shores of Tommorrow - Roger MacBride Allen - SF - (part 3 of the Ocean of Years) - awesome trilogy with a great ending. Some really great ideas in there as well. Great stuff!

I polished off Crossroads of Twilight last night so I'm up to speed on the Wheel of Time after not touching the series for four or five years. I know it's hip to bitch about how nothing happens in the latter books of the series but I didn't really find that to be true. Sure, Jordan isn't quite working at the level of Steven Erikson or George R.R. Martin but who is?

Next up: The Miocene Arrow by Sean McMullen.

Reading: A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide

Stephanie Power won the Pulitzer at age 32 for her chilling book on how America and the World have ignored genocide throughout the 20th century. From the Armenian slaughter in WW1, to the holocaust, Pol Pot's slaugher of 2 million cambodians, Saddam's attempt to exterminate the Kurds, up through the Rwanda massacre, she paints a picture where America's interests always superceded humanitarian need. It is a book that will fill you with outrage, yet she does a masterful job of presenting all sides. You understand why the U.S. officials ignored the genocide, and one of the tragedies is that it's sometimes difficult to say they were wrong. It'd be easy to feel more comfortable if the situation was more black and white. But it isn't, and that is what is worrying for future incidents of genocide.

This book is an absolutely riveting book, and for such a grim subject is often vastly entertaining. Oftentimes it reads like a thriller, although you know the bad guys are going to win. And even in the midst of despair this book is also uplifting, as it shows those few individuals who were truly able to make a difference. The heart of the novel is Raphael Lemkin, the Polish jew who saw the holocaust was going to happen before most of the world did, and tried and failed to get the message out, and through his constant perserverance, was able after the war to get the World community to realize the threat of genocide and to make it against the law. He was also the one who fasihoned the word. His story is moving and uplifting. But there are other heroes in the story as well, but I'll leave it up to you to discover them

This is one of the most important books in the past decade at least, and deserves all the acclaim and adoration it has received. It is a book that can have the power to change policy, and to change hearts. I highly recommend everybody pick this book up

I think they get even more interesting after the focus shifts from Dorothy's adventures (bk 2 & 3, I think involve dorothy as a primary character, and she comes back briefly in the last book -13 or 14 as I recall)... the OZ books written by other writers weren't as good tho.

By cruise do you mean deployment or "a cruise?" If its the former I would recommend ordering all of Steve Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen from Amazon UK. He is generally considered to be the equal of George RR Martin on many boards. He isn't published in the US yet (first book comes out here in June) but he has four books available in England and Canada:

1) Gardens of the Moon
2) Deadhouse Gates
3) Memories of Ice
4) House of Chains

Gardens is the shortest at 700 pages. The rest are approx 1000 pages. Should be perfect reading for an underway. The series sets new standards for "epic" and each book does a good job at telling a somewhat standalone story while progressing the series as a whole.

Also, I noticed you don't have Robin Hobb's third series listed (Tawny Man trilogy). You may want to look at picking those up.

 theohall: I'll second kmgrey's Steven Erikson nod. I'd rank him ahead of Martin but that might just be foolish Canadian pride. For sf, you might wanna check out The Golden Age (although I know the China Mi&eacuteville praise in the review won't draw you in [Wink] ) and The Phoenix Exultant by John C. Wright. Very cool, far, far future sf. Another sf recommendation I like to throw out is Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Graphic, ultraviolent sf noir: tastes as good as it sounds!

 Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, it's a deployment following the 6 month of workups during which we'll only see port for around 80 days, then cruise for 6 months.

Added all to the text file of books to acquire, except The Golden Age. Read an excerpt and that's not my kind of thing, just like Mieville wasn't my cup of tea either.

Last week while I was in San Francisco for a day, I managed to re-read "Good Omens." It's a hell of a lot funnier now than it was back in the day, mainly because I'm old enough to actually get a lot of the humor. The slams at life in London cracked me up, but I was amazed at home un-funny it gets right around the 3/4 mark once the witchfinders show up.
