Andy Whitfield dead at 39.

I must admit I'm surprised.  That last I heard he was fighting it and he seemed hopeful.   icon_cry

It was either Crux or Crusis, I can't remember, that kept telling me that Spartacus got better after the first few episodes after I was very vocal about how much I hated the pilot.  Thanks to him, I went back and discovered what a subtle and great actor Whitfield was in that role.  He completely won me over with his muted portrayal of the gladiator.  I hope Starz gives Whitfield a respectful memorial in the next season of the show...he deserves it after the work he did for them.

Damn.  I liked Spartacus.  Even more so after watching the horrible Camelot series.

Damn that came out of nowhere.

RIP Andy.

Spartacus was a hell of a TV show, if not one of my all-time favorites.. and Andy at the helm made it all that much better.

I also think Starz should do some sort of tribute to him at the start of next season. One hell of an actor and one hell of a show.

I was exactly the same way. The pilot completely turned me off of the show and I didn't watch it again for months. When I did, I got hooked.

39 is too young to die.

A bit sad over this passing. Seems like he was finally just starting to make a name for himself. It's also a bit shocking that he could be in such good shape and a die in about a year.

indeed, Jupiter's Cock is weeping golden tears today.  I also agree, 39 is way too young to go.

I thought he had it beat.  That sucks.  He made that show and rebranded the Spartacus role.  Which makes it even harder to believe that he was brought down by anything.  Too young with too much potential.  RIP brother.

If you loved Andy Whitfield, you'll want to check out EW's report about a Kickstarter to cover the editing costs for a documentary about his fight against cancer:

Andy Whitfield documentary 'Be Here Now' seeks fans' help to finish the film

Quote
Whitfield was given only a 25% chance for survival when his lymphoma came back, right before he was due to return to his hit show. He and his wife Vashti set out with filmmakers to explore his medical and alternative healing options, and the movie takes an unflinching look at one manís struggle against illness.

The filmmakers, led by Lilibet Foster, now need to raise the last bit of funding to finish editing the film with the hope it will eventually get distribution and are asking fans to donate to the cause through Kickstarter. Take a look at the footage below for a sense of the project (but maybe keep some tissues nearby before you press play).
Co-star and close friend Jai Courtney (who will play John McLane's son in the upcoming Die Hard 5 movie) gives a brief intro in the documentary preview.

Even off-set, you can see he had a nice quiet charisma about him.
