In the mood to rent a few hostage movies this weekend (anything but the hostage negotiator with samuel jackson!) preferably with a lot of bad guys who know what they're doing.. any suggestions?

I'm almost sure I stand alone in this, but I liked the initial hostage scene in Swordfish. Hell, other than every time Hally Barry spoke, I enjoyed the whole flick. Not a hostage movie per se, but...

preferably with a lot of bad guys who know what they're doing.. Hostage Hostage doesn't quite meet that requirement. However, I did like the movie and would recommend it as a decent hostage movie. How about The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three? Pelham 1-2-3, a subway train, becomes the focal point of the most audacious and unusual terrorist attack ever seen. Four gunmen, going by color codenames, seize the train and hold its passengers and conductor hostage halfway between underground stations, demanding a hefty ransom else they will begin executing hostages. A veteran NY transit policeman leads negotiations with the hijackers to prevent any killing, but amid the showdown a question nags at authrorities - with the gunmen and their hostages in a tunnel surrounded by police on all sides, how can they possibly escape?

The fact that I'm the first to mention the Best Hostage Movie of All Time, Dog Day Afternoon, vaguely disturbs me.

I watched this, based on whitey's recommendation actually, and thought it was pretty good. Just now, I saw this: John Travolta dressed like a fool, apparently for his role in... Pelham 1-2-3! A remake! Why do they keep remaking movies?

And you're right, Travolta does look like a bit like a foo'.

Out of Sight is a good movie with an interesting hostage twist. From Dusk 'tll Dawn also starts as a Hostage movie. Midnight Run isn't exactly a hostage movie, but the Bounty Hunter shepherding may count (and it's a personal favorite).
I'll also echo Die Hard and Speed, as well as the Ref

Dog Day Afternoon
+1 to that, a must see movie for anyone who likes Pacino. This movie along with the Godfather are what made him a household name. It's possible you'll be turned off by some of the subject matter, but everyone should watch this move at least once just to see a master actor at the top of his form. Definitely 1 of the best hostage films ever made IMHO.
