Thanks, nothing yet, was just a routine check and they could see the filament is decaying, but the pressure is ok. Go back Thursday so they can dilate my eyes to get a better look. Still not sure what it means, eye drops for the rest of my life, surgery, or eventual blindness? Trying not to stress it.

Whereabouts do you live, Lee?  And how feasible would it be for you to drive or fly to see a different eye doctor?  My wife has had a crazypants eye condition her whole life, so over the past decade I've become familiar with a number of the best eye doctors on the planet.  And I don't just mean that as in "I really like her eye doctors," I mean "this guy pioneered the treatment for X condition" and "this other guy invented the technique for this eye surgery."

I'm in FL and it was a military doctor. Since I retire next month I am going to have to deal with the VA from here on out. I am at their mercy.

I will find out more Thursday, there is a chance it's just something to keep on eye on in the future. I don't have the high pressure that goes with glaucoma but that is only in 50% of cases of it. She needs to dilate may eyes to really come to a conclusion. Go from there. I really can't tell how worried I should be, the doctor didn't want to give me too much information yet, and the the internet articles are hard to judge what would apply to me. I keep hoping to find someone with experience, since this isn't that uncommon in older people, but haven't had much luck.

Actually the optometrist today was really hot. Usually they just shine a light in my eyes and do a minute look around. After looking into her eyes for 5 minutes I was starting to not care about how cute she was. It was obvious something was wrong.

Well the offer stands indefinitely if you ever change your mind. If you ever want me to sneak in a question to my wife's eye docs you're having trouble getting answered, I'm also happy to do that. Lately we're paying a visit once or twice a month.

Thanks, I really do appreciate the offer. Just can't wait for Thursday now. I am sure if my condition is serious, they will send me to a specialist, the big thing now is just not knowing.

Hopefully having a specialist like that is working out for your wife. Must be nice that she finally has someone in the know for her, that can make a big difference.

I see what you did there.

Glaucoma was the condition that originally led to recognition of marijuana's medicinal value. You most definitely won't hear about that from the VA, but if they don't come up with something effective you might have to consider self-medicating.

I am a bit unclear on this. Marijuana helps with pain doesn't it? From my readings there are two types of glaucoma, a quick, painful version and a slow, painless version. I may have the latter. How does pot help with it? Am I wrong to assume it's for the quick painful version only?

For the kind I may have, it seems it will start with eyedrops, and then possibly laser surgery. But everything talks about the pressure in the eye, which I do not have, at least not yet. They seem more concerned with the filament going away. The doctor said something about I shouldn't be able to "see through [this part]". Can't remember what part she said.

Marijuana was found, in the early 1970s, to reduce pressure in the eyes, though how the cannabinoids in marijuana produce this effect remains unknown.

I'd smoke it, just to be safe. Tongue

Smoking marijuana definitely does lower intraocular pressure, and that helps prevent nerve damage. However, it only works for 3-4 hours so you'd have to smoke it frequently, and the medical establishment considers its "mood altering effects" an undesirable side effect. Party poopers. Moreover, it lowers blood pressure, which can be counterproductive for the nerve. So the official word is that marijuana is not recommended as a glaucoma treatment. However, other sites say that it can be useful in combination with other treatments, particularly for patients who don't respond to eyedrops.

So...Yes and No. Consult a non-government physician if you don't respond to conventional treatment.

Blerg. Up 90 mins before I wanted to be. However, that allowed me to already be awake when my daughter came in scared at the sounds of the night.

Now it's too windy (I hate running in the wind) to run outside so it's off to the treadmill.

Gonna be a loooooooooong day.
