So I am a JR. in college and my upper level english course is talking about words and there uses.  We had an interesting discussion about the words used by gamers.  The one that came up and was most interesting was "rape" as in "you just got raped."

What are words you hear online that strike you as weird?  It is just interesting to think about.

Owned.

Say you found a parking spot and some car saw it after you but you got it.  "Oh we just OWNED that car!"  I use that word in everyday conversation several times a day.  Totally started saying it due to playing games online.

I've not heard that many words outside 'pwned' -- and that one only in the context of a joke with friends.

The biggest thing I've heard (which I hate) is all the racial slur words on XBox Live.  Once I'm a parent, if I overheard my child using that kind of language, I think penalty #1 would be not using my system for a week, and second would be never again...

As if using "rape" in casual conversation isn't bad enough, describing something as an "abortion" seems to be getting more and more common as well.  Add "jew" as a casual insult and you're really helping the gaming community gain respect.

"camper" because it first of all implies there is something wrong with playing defense and because of the funny visual it brings to mind.  To be fair, I think 'camping' was a lame tactic back in the days of deathmatch only play, but TF and CTF have been around how long now?  I think it's time to retire that insult.

It can sit right along side of Newb (or however you'd like to spell it...noob, n00b, nub, whatever) and Leet.  Both suck pretty hard.

"Twink" is used in WoW.

Evidentially, the word does not mean what they think it does.  icon_biggrin

I don't know if any of these words strike me as weird, per se, but they have been added to the broader lexicon for better or worse.  For the most part they are no different than the dialect that springs up from most any competitive sport, this one with the help of millions of games going on constantly with people from all over the country and world.

Obviously "gay" (or "ghey") is one that has been thrown around for years to describe anything/anyone that is lame and I noticed really gained ground when Counter-Strike first hit the mod scene.

And where would we be without "grinding"?  (and not the fun kind...)

camped/camping is when you have someone waiting at your corpse/an mob spawn point and you/they set up camp and wait.

"X is camping my corpse"
"He is camping the broken tooth spawn point"

DoT - Damage Over Time
HoT - Heal Over Time
Healbot - a Healertype who follows someone around and heals them.
Kite - Hitting a mob for damage then running ahead of it leading it somewhere
Gank - getting mugged/attacked/killed - I just got ganked in STV
nerf - To lower the abilities of a class so they arn't as effective/good
Pull - To attack a mob and bring it to your parties location
Epeen - An imaginary level of coolness for online people...Usally a nerdness level  "Getting That really rare Sword really only raises your epeen level"
Tank - To be the person taking the brunt of a creatures damage.  - "The warrior will tank while the healer keeps him alive and the rest of us do damage"
(Honor/Rep) Train - A Group of individuals usually on teamspeak going into battlegrounds for the sole purpose of quickly winning and thus gaining (Honor/Rep) quickly
Buff - 2 meanings to be very well equipped or strong (O am quite buff with this new eq), and a spell that gives out a bonus.  (Would you give me a int buff?)
Plz - the most retarded spelling of please ever (Sorry that one irritates me greatly)
Run - doing a specific mob/quest/instance (We are going to run BWL later)
agro - How angry a mob is at you, the odds of it attacking you.
ZOMG - and exclamation of "Oh My God"

...except there's nothing intrinsically offensive about the word "abortion" unless you're a religio-nut.

Racial slurs and sexual assault?  Yeah, sorta tasteless.  Voluntary, protected-by-law termination of pregnancy?  Meh.

I can see what you're saying, but I think there's a difference between saying "it was an abortive coup" and "it was an abortion of a coup."  You're probably right, though, since words like "stillborn" are accepted adjectives in the English language.  I just don't think I'll jump for joy if "vaporware" starts being described as "stillbornware."

Wonderpug ftw (oh and ftw is used a lot too)... I personally hate anything that casually refers to words that offend people (ppl, btw).  It's partly bigotry, sexism, racism, etc - and partly ignorance.  The word Jap in my day was an insult, now it seems to be also used as an abbreviation.  And the word raped... well no woman of any maturity or intelligence would think that was acceptable. Granted, rape is a word that perfectly fits the situation, by defiinition - however it has a newer, more common, meaning that is just downright disrespectful  and repugnant to women.  If you were in my linkshell (read: FFXI clan) and you used these words or phrases, and many others I can't think of right now - you would be censured:

oh thats so gay
i so raped that monster
he runs like a girl
that Jap stole that monster from me
what a Jew ( or Spic, Wop, etc)
what a bitch, or - he's my bitch
oh my god (omg) he is so retarded

The list is endless, but we rarely have reason to holler at peeps (when not ppl) cz (because) we run a tight ship on our clan - our primary rule is Disrespect No One (since you really don't know who is at the other end of that gamer tag...

kk rant is over, plz forgive me... tyvm and gnite!

ps.. I'm guilty of "plz" - because of my muscle disorder, I abbreviate everything I can think of at the time  Srry!  icon_twisted
