Thoughts? I thought they ended the preview at an awkward, non-enticing point, but other than that everything looked great. book plot spoiler of next scene I agree with your spoiler point. Had I not read the book, I don't know how I would have felt about the preview, but because I have, all I can say is, HOLY BALLS that looked awesome! Leave it to HBO to capture the setting and characters spot-on! CANNOT wait until 4/17.

That preview gave me the same chills as the FotR Mordor preview way back when. No HBO subscription though so I'll have to suffer until it's on DVD

Getting HBOCanada is such a pain for any of the cable and sattelite services in my city, that I fear I'm going to have to wait for DVD too.

Yeah, I wish I could just pay HBO to let me stream/download just these shows. No way am I reactivating my Comcast cable and ordering HBO just to watch one show. Though damnit if I'm not tempted...

Wish Comcast was doing that this weekend. I called this morning and tried to play the "give me cheaper and/or free HBO or I cancel" card, but that has to do through their "advance customer care" department which doesn't work on Sundays. Looks like I'll have to catch the first episode off one of my friend's DVRs.

We're getting this tomorrow and I'm quite excited. Sky has been really pushing it and all their marketing material says "only one day later than America gets it!" Ye olde girlfriende and I have read all the books and we're not going to miss this for anything.

It was good more than just good...pretty much every thing that i had pictured in my head come to life on the screen. this episode was a little slow with all the exposition and getting to know a few characters (not a complaint), but there are countless great things to come and it should be a fantastic ride if all the episodes are as well done as the premiere. my only concern is trying to imagine how they're fitting everything important from the first book into only 10 episodes. that said, i can't wait for next week!

I'm totally unfamiliar with this series, but it was a good first episode.
I'm a bit confused about a couple things... so should I look into it, or just figure it out on the fly?

Amazing. It really blew Camelot out of the water. The settings, characters, costumes - just awesome. Great acting all around. I thought I would hate Dinklage as Tyrion but he fit the role pretty well. Still, nothing like I pictured the character in the book. The show had gore, sex, burly dudes in armor, amazing set pieces and some truly breath taking CGI.
Is it next Sunday yet?
One thing I didn't really buy was the character of Drogo. He was big but he looked about as menacing as a puppy dog. Still, a minor complaint.

it's the beginning of the series, so you're probably on the same footing the rest of us were when we first read it.

yeah, he looked more like a creepy pedophile than a barbarian warlord. I think it was the eyeliner. overall I liked it a lot. I just hope HBO is ready to make the investment the series is going to require and not bail out after 1 or 2 seasons.

I don't think it's a German Shepherd. It's a special dog bred to look wolf-like without actually being part wolf. There are strict regulations about working with wolves, so they have limited options. I suspect the direwolves will become CGI in later seasons, but for this one they're still very young.
After reading a bit more about the dogs, it turns out that Ghost is a German Shepherd/Akita mix, while the other five pups are Northern Inuit Dogs. Just beautiful animals. Really enjoyed that first episode. They had a ton of exposition to put out, but it didn't seem to slow things down too much.

They aren't likely to make that mistake again, particularly since GoT is getting rave reviews and lots of press. I'm expecting them to announce the second season before Monday is over.

I've watched this episode twice now. It's quite possibly 2011's biggest event for me, one I've been desperately waiting for since the news first appeared that HBO was considering greenlighting production for a pilot. We should consider ourselves damned lucky that we're getting something this close to the books in a time where few companies are willing to take chances in entertainment of any kind. The reviewers who've seen the first 6 episodes say that the first one is the weakest of the bunch. That says a lot about the quality of what's yet to come.

I suppose they are in a fairly good position with casting if they get approved for more seasons, perhaps with the exception of Bran and Arya, who are likely to age faster than the story. They haven't shown much of Tommen and Myrcella yet. If they do books 2-5 in 2012-2015, maybe book 6 will be about ready to come out .

I watched this... I really disliked the book intensely (I made it to the line about letting the entire army and their horses fuck his sister and quit), mostly because I thought the writing was pretty terrible, though some parts of the story were interesting... and I hardly ever stop reading a book once I start.
I thought the show was MUCH better, while still ridiculously melodramatic and soap opera-ish. The opening sequence north of the wall was really, really cool. Loved that part. Good, for the most part, casting really helps... still rolling my eyes at some of the melodrama, but I'll keep watching for sure. I'm not clear on most names yet, but whoever the blonde dipshit is who wants to horse-whore his sister is gonna wear... annoying character, and annoying actor overacting.

He's not overacting in the slightest. Viserys is completely insane (it's a result of the inbreeding in his family. Daenerys was lucky and didn't get the worst of it), which comes off in pretty much every bit of dialogue involving him.

You can be totally insane and not overact. He does seem to be acting like the character acted in the book... but that was over... um... written? Yeah, I don't know. I can like a performance and not a character... that's a good thing, in my opinion. In this case I have to say I dislike both of them.

I'm dreading the point where Joffrey opens his mouth. They definitely did a good job casting a kid who looks like a total prick. Kind of like Draco Malfoy in the Potter movies.
