For any metalheads out there, this is indeed a sad, sad day.
Dimebag Darrell, (lead guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan) was shot, along with 4 others, at a Damageplan concert in Columbus tonight. Unconfirmed reports are one of the others shot may be Vinny Paul, Dimebags brother and bandmate in both Pantera and Damageplan. So far it seems to be confirmed that Dimebag and the shooter are for sure 2 of the deceased. What a scum. Pantera were a huge influence on me. Damageplan was to play here (Chicago) on Friday. I have met Dimebag before and despite the rough exterior, he was a exceptional human being, kind and considerate. He lived for music and he died doing what he loved. I am so, so bummed. R.I.P to all involved...except for the lowlife shooter....there's a place in Hell waiting for him.

When I was younger I was all about Pantera.  I met the whole band after a show in San Jose once and got their autographs.  Man, I just loved going to those shows.  That sucks for DD and all involved.

Holy Crap -

Yeah, I worshipped at the altar of Pantera for a year or two in the early 90s... even got to hang out with them and White Zombie early on during the Vulgar Display of Power tour.  Still have my signed backstage pass somewhere...
RIP Darrel.

Here's the local story:  http://www.nbc4i.com/news/3983630/detail.htm

Edit:

I typed up my Pantera story on mah blog:

Damn, that just sucks.  Pantera was the first metal band I really got into back in high school.  They broke me out of that bizzare rap phase I was going through.

I'm going to go put on some "Fucking Hostile" now.  RIP Darrel.

Just in shock.  And it happened to one of the best metal guitarist ever!!!

Why wasn't the crowd checked by security when entering the building?   How did the shooter get the gun?  What kind of gun was it?  What did the shooter say to dime while he shot him?  Was it because of the Pantera break up or Dime's recent switch of guitar companies?

I know one thing from being a metal fan for most of my life.  The metal community is a tight family.  We will see a fury of togetherness in the next few days.

R.I.P. DIME

A couple reports I read say the shooter hopped the fence and snuck in through a back door.  Farkin bastage.

Dude, wow... I was shocked when I first heard that DD had been shot.  I was, still am a huge Pantera fan.  This is truly a sad day for all metal fans alike.  I've got the feeling I'm gonna be cranking the "Cowboys From Hell" for a bit.

RIP.DD

Rumor mill in full swing.  I'm at work.  Is there someone watching the news on TV?  Can you confirm if Vinnie (Dime's brother) is okay?

From the AP:

Quote
The gunman had a hostage in a headlock and seemed to be preparing to kill him when the officer, James D. Niggemeyer, managed to shoot without injuring the hostage, police said.

Officer Niggemeyer = Hero.

From some of the accounts I've read from a few of the people in the crowd , they said the guy shouted something about him (DBD) breaking up Pantera before he grabbed him and shot him 4 or 5 times.

This is why I don't like people or gatherings. :|

Yea I've been reading that too.
If thats true, only goes to show how much of a retard the shooter was.
Anyone remotely familiar with Pantera knows that DD didnt break them up. Phil did. DD lived for Pantera and was as confused as anyone as to why Phil ended it like he did. No annoucement or warning to anyone, including the band. He just walked away. What ever the reason the loser had for shooting up a crowd will never, ever justify loss of innocent lives. Damageplan were due to play a free concert for kids here in Chicago on Friday. All you needed to get in was a new toy. The toys were gonna be donated to needy children. Merry f'ing Christmas.

I had the pleasure of seeing Damage Plan open for Slayer a few months ago... as a Pantera fan, this was a great experience.  Dime (especially when he was stage) was larger than life.  Music was in his veins, and I know that same music carried a lot of people through rough times, including my best friend.

Unbelievable.  Saddening.

RIP Dime, and the three others killed.

The metal community is coming together.  Check this out.  Wow!

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=30272

From Dave Mustaine of Megadeth:

"To SLAYER and METALLICA: I am sorry for whatever I may have done in the past and wish to make it right, to put it behind us. Please let me know how and when we can talk this out.

"To previous bandmembers and managers: I say the same to you.

"To all the MEGADETH/METALLICA fans: from this day forward, there will never be another unkind word from my mouth perpetuating this silly 22-year-old feud.

"And to heavy metal fans around the world: I am going to emulate Dimebag by being more like him; more friendly, and more interested in your lives too, I promise.

"I am grateful to have been asked to come in this hour of darkness to represent us all as we come together and heal as a worldwide music community, and I would be a fraud if I didn't say I need to do more to better represent.

"Thank you in advance for your forgiveness and for your support."
