ok, so this one probably won't be hunting birds in the air anytime soon, but if this cat can grow wings, why oh why can't i?

I don't think it's any coincidence that the Shanxi province is one of the more polluted provinces in China.

They don't mention if this has been confirmed yet by anyone beyond just some photographs, so it could still be a hoax, there just isn't enough info in the article.

If it's real, that just getting some DNA from that cat could help scientists quite bit as those "wings" seem to be sprouting symmetrically.  However, things just don't start sprouting out of complex organisms like cats.

Some polydactyl cats (cats with extra digits on their paws) have been known to use those extra digits like thumbs, not quite opposeable, but close.  Sailors in days of old used to prize such cats aboard ships as they made better rat catchers and could climb around more easily.  Modern day polydactyl cat owners also see the same traits.

So next thing we'll see cats with wings and opposable thumbs. The end is nigh.  slywink

Of course their finicky natures will never let them organize enough to plot our downfall...

My families’ cat had 8 toes on one front paw and 6 on the other (5 and 5 in back).  It was more of a folding action than a thumb but she could pick things up with only one hand.  Only problem was she seemed to get stuck on things more than normal cats because the claws went in too many directions.

I'm pretty skeptical of that photo, especially considering the angle at which it was taken. As you said, one wing-like appendage wouldn't be far fetched, but two symmetrical "wings"? Doubtful.
