About a month ago I decided to grow a beard again, but only as a stepping stone to doing something different.  I decided to go with a comic book villain look for some reason.

Now I had a full beard a few times before, but honestly that was just because I was fed up with shaving all the time, and it was easier to just groom the beard every so often.

In general, what do most people think about facial hair?  I notice most people are clean shaven, but from my own experience it was a choice made due to simplicity- you just shave, like everyone else, and don't have to worry too much about whether it's a good look, etc.  It's a "safe" choice.

That bears out from a few people I've talked to: they would like to do something, but can't really figure out what to do, so they just keep shaving away.

So what about you guys?  Anyone actually putting their facial hair to use, or been considering it, or just don't like it at all?

I grew a beard about a year ago and I like it.  I keep it clean though, no ZZ-Top.  Part of it was because I got tired of shaving.  Part of it was because I want to be King Leonidas.

I work as a Network Engineer at an ISP - my goatee was practically issued at the door.  As long as it is groomed, I think it is a good accoutrement.

I'm pretty lax at shaving-  I'll do it every couple of weeks or so.  During the winter I'm more likely to wait longer.  Luckily I don't have to look professional too often.

Thankfully work is pretty lax about facial hair.  This winter I've had a full beard 5 times, shaved that down to a goatee 2 times, and a soul patch pretty much constantly if no beard or goatee.

March 7th, I will be meeting up with about 15-20 old college friends and fraternity brothers.  I'm planning on something special for the booze fest.

I used to grow facial hair to try and hide my double chin.  My double chin is pretty much gone now though, but I'm unemployed until the 10th of next month so I haven't been shaving.  Or showering.

I shave pretty much every day.  I've tried to grow a beard or goat once or twice, but I can never get past the OMFG FUCKING ITCHY part.  Somewhere around day 3 or 4 I go nuts and need to shave.

I don't make any judgements or assumptions about anyone based on their facial hair or lack thereof (so long as it is at least groomed or trimmed or something).  It's just a personal preference thing.

Sorta like my XBL gamertag, I've changed my facial hair quite often...nowadays, it's usually goatee or no goatee.  Although I rock the beard look pretty often.

My skin is so sensitive to shaving that it gets really red and irritated.  So if I need to actually shave, I do it the night before.

Usually I shave once or twice a week, I never minded the way stubble looked or felt. The last few months I've had a goatee and have been enjoying it again (I had one for a few years in my early twenties). I keep it short (#3 on the trimmer). I'll probably shave it clean as we get closer to summer and the warmer months. I've experimented with different looks but the short goatee or just plain old stubble seems to work best for me.

I've had some kind of facial hair since I was about 14, with brief periods of not.  Mostly, I don't like shaving, so I try to minimize having to.  I had a goatee for a long time, but at some point I switched to a full beard, since that requires even less shaving.  A beard trimmer with an adjustable guard makes keeping facial hair neat is mandatory.

Currently, I have a full beard that I keep slightly longer in the goatee area.  I trim it and shave the neck area once a week.  I really can't imagine being without face hair anymore.  One of these days I'm going to try something more outlandish, but given where I work, I'm not convinced it'll be noticed.

Random thoughts:
I've never been comfortable with growing facial hair.  I've grown a mustache before, didn't like it. On the the hand, If I have a few days off from work, I give my face  a rest from the blade.
May be a generational thing or something.  Could be I just don't want to fuck with the extra grooming/trimming of it.
While growing up, one of those adages told me was that someone wearing facial hair is hiding something.  You hardly ever see a modern day American politician with facial hair.
I'm not overtly prejudicial of someone with hair on their face, unless they look like Charles Manson or some Islamic terrorist dude.  I saw my first real life bottle brush mustache(ala Hitler or Chaplin) a couple of months back. I did a double take on that one.

Two kinds of people don't have facial hair:  women and children.

I have never been able to grow a beard for more than a week before it gets too itchy.  However, I always have long sideburns and usually have a soul patch.  Recently I saw a guy on the elevator at work with a sould patch and I thought "Wow, he looks like a douchebag."  Then, "I bet he doesn't think he looks like a douchebag."  Than, "I wonder if I look like a douchebag."  So I asked the girl who sits next to me, "Do I look like a douchebag?"  and told her the preceeding story.  So I decided to shave the soul patch.  Now I'm growing it back again.  I decded I didn't look like a douchebag.

About a year and a half ago I also grew a moustache briefly so I could look like I was on Deadwood.

Currently sporting a goatee... the wife likes it and it makes my face look thinner.  The one good thing about going through chemo a few years ago was not having to worry about shaving for a few months.

I think the "trimmed stubble" look that Steve Jobs sports is the worst of all options, as far as facial hair goes.  It's higher upkeep than simply shaving, and you can't just forget about shaving, since you'll hit the "OMG THIS ITCHES!!1!!" zone after a few days.

Personally, I was going for a look which would fit in perfectly in, say, the late 1800s.  Very cool, I think that era's making a comeback  icon_biggrin

I go goatee or 70s sideburns. I dont keep either long and 90% of the time go clean shaven. beards itch the shaznuts out of me. Im one of those guys though who cant grow a full lower lip to chin area hair patch. I have the little soul patch but on each side theres nothing there until the mustache comes down. I also now shave my head clean. Been doing it about 6 months or so. Told the wife next year I grow it out for winter brrrr.

Goatee here.  I've had one forever and occasionally I'll grow it into a beard until Mrs. Warning complains.  I haven't had a clean-shaved face in over 10 years.

I had a week off from school so I didnt shave and grew a beard. I dont like growing hair on my cheek or neck area, so I always trim it down. When I went back almost every commented on it, no negative remarks, but I'm pretty sure everyone that didnt comment on it, doesnt like it. Most encouraged further growth. Tonight I shaved  off the "moustache" part of my beard and just left what is now a "chin strap" type of thing, since I always shave my cheeks down to my jaw line and my neck up to my jaw line. I looked in the mirror after and mistaked myself for Wes Borland.....but much better looking and with hair from my chick up to my bottom lip.

Other than about a year when I worked as a security guard, I've had a goatee for most of the last 12 years or so.  It's quite thick and full, but for some reason my cheeks are a bit thin so I can't grow a full beard.  Or at least I've never been willing to look crappy for long enough to try.

I've never quite understood jobs where you can have some types of facial hair but not others.  Working at a grocery store we could have the bushiest fucking mustache you wanted, but not a trimmed goatee.  As a security guard I could have a mustache or full beard, but no goatee.

I've had a goatee most of the last 15 years.  It's really common in Seattle, even among corporate drones I know.  Oddly, my last job wouldn't allow it so I settled for a mustache only, even though I felt like a '70s throwback.  Once I left there, I grew the goatee back.

I should probably try a beard again soon.  It's been a long time since I last tried and at that time it didn't fill in much above the jaw line.
