Quote
Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.

His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.

RIP Ernest.  You had a good run, rest easy.

I think he would like being known for a variety of roles.

McHale's Navy is what I remember him most for.   I remember reruns of it being on when I was a kid.

McHale's Navy is what I remember him most for.   I remember reruns of it being on watching its original run when I was a kid.

FTFY

First movie that came to my mind was Flight of the Phoenix -- one of his best. Second was the remake of All Quiet On the Western Front. Although he played the role well enough, he was not convincing as a starving soldier...and watching John-Boy Walton carry him back to friendly lines was just surreal. Borgnine did not lose weight for the role.

He was in a few great movies, and had minor roles in a lot of not-so-great ones. I just padded my netflix queue with half a dozen that look worthwhile.

Yeah,Airwolf and Escape from New York for me

What is strange was i always associated him with some weird TV movie/mini series of Treasure Island with i think a Sci Fi twist in it from the 80s i remember watching every morning, but looking on IMDB,i can't see it

I was also thinking Battle Beyond the Stars, but nope not in that either
...i think i am going bonkers, and think he was in everything

He was one of those guys of late when i saw him on TV or at the Oscars(him and Mickey Rooney as seat fillers),that made me say "I thought he died ages ago?"

sad that he has died though,he looked like a genuinely nice guy

My first recollection of Mr. Borgnine was in the TV movie, The Ghost of Flight 401.  And I, too, will miss Mermaid Man.    icon_frown

YAY,i'm not crazy,it was Space Island(said to be the inspiration for Disney's Treasure Planet),and not to be confused with the late 90s TV series Space Island One

it had some Italian or French name on IMDb which is why i didn't recognise it

If you REALLY love Ernest, you must track down 1975's...

The Devil's Rain:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Devil%27s_Rain
Quote
A curse hovers over the Preston family, caused by their betrayal of the Satanic priest John Corbis (Ernest Borgnine). Corbis has followed the Preston family for generations, in pursuit of a Satanic book through which he obtains great power. Corbis first captures the father, Steve Preston, who is allowed to escape home to warn his wife and younger son about Corbis's wrath, and to give the book to Corbis; this is done, at which point Steve Preston then melts into a waxy substance, apparently melting in the rain.

Mark Preston (William Shatner) takes the book, hoping to meet with Corbis and defeat him.
And so on. It's completely ridiculous but at age 10, I thought it was pretty fun to watch Ernest Borgnine as a satanic priest (!) doing battle with Captain Kirk (Shatner).  icon_razz

After "The Exorcist," Satanic Thrillers were all the rage for a few years.
