I'm happy for ya man!  Let us know when you actually have the DVDs in your hand.

"In other news, a local man burned a Best Buy to the ground.  When asked why he did it he was quoted as saying 'It had to burn, they said they were getting the DVDs next week instead of today!!'."

Serious question, but what's so good about this show?
[list=1]
  • The first emergency medical drama series to present the adventures, trials and tribulations of both the hospital emergency room trauma unit and the emergency medical services (paramedics) and the interaction between the two.
  • Each and every character on the show has personality and you really end up caring about them.  They become "a family" to you over time and you miss them when they're gone.
  • Incredible rescue scenes.  I cannot stress this enough.  Everything from fires to heart attacks to OD's to explosions to trapped victims in every conceivable situation imaginable - some very serious and some light-hearted.  Lots of rescue's from "high up".
  • I've said this in another post:  the camaraderie between the characters is incredible.  You really see that they care about each other - especially paramedics Gage and DeSoto.
  • The "Squad" is just so damn cool! Cool
  • So is the engine! Cool
  • The Biophone!!!!
  • Great storylines!  Read the Season 1 episode guide in this thread.
  • The hot nurses - especially Julie London and the blonde nurse!
  • Lots of humor spread throughout practically every episode especially between firefighter Chet and paramedic John Gage - always pulling practical jokes on each other.
  • For mytocles - John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) is the Bomb!
  • The show lasted for 7 seasons! - 1972-1979 (the last couple of years being mainly 2hr movies)
  • If you ever thought fire trucks were cool then you will like this show.
  • Because I love it!

...and then heal you by administering an IV with D5W TKO (to sustain you till you get to the hospital), applying the appropriate bandages, and checking vital signs (respiration, BP, pulse).  Depending on the size of the cut you should be pretty stable upon reaching Rampart General.

FWIW, it comes in two separate DVD cases which slide into a more sturdy box/sleeve.  On the back of each case is a short synopsis of each episode, to include any notable guest stars.  Gage's picture graces the spine of one of the cases, and DeSoto's is on the other.

Unfortunately, there is no artwork on the DVDs themselves.  They are remarkably unremarkable.  frown

Hey Gromit,

I saw your post on OO for the DVD Tuesday releases.  You posted the exact wording for the intro to Emergency.  Scary thing is I have it memorized as well!  Are you a fan like me?  I know the show inside out and would love to discuss favorite episodes, characters etc.

"OMG OMG OMG" SS - I'm already an episode behind!  I have excuses - lots of 'em too (beta testing, walking sick puppy every two hours, been a bit sick myself, Dad is in hospital! Probably more but I forgot!)

It's 3 AM now, I'm just finishing up reading and writing email and CG and beta testing posts... and the DAWG has to go out.  Ooph.

I'll try to catch up tonight - did you ever decide if you were going to watch one a night - or buck up and do it once a week like the original? OMG, I might have to try to watch two episodes tonight!  I'd better hit the sack, OMG, OMG, OMG!!!  Tongue

YES!  Mix that with the Squads siren and you have TV viewing bliss!  Also, you can't beat the alarm system in the fire station.  Click on my "ALERT" at the top of the thread and you will hear it.  It's only like 3 seconds long and not that loud. biggrin

Yes, I'm a fan, but I haven't seen the show in years, other than the occassional episode on TV-Land.  I do have fond recollections of playing with a toy Squad-51 (like a Mattell Hot Wheel) and saving all manner of idiots.  biggrin

OMG!  So did I!  I had the same toy squad and the engine.  I use to drive them all around my house rescuing imaginary people!  I use to also create huge accidents with my other matchbox cars and come to the rescue!  I can top that though.  I had the Emergency! board game and I had an Emergency! lunchbox - which I actually used in elementary school!  And I loved the Emergency +4 cartoon on Saturday mornings.

Thanks.  For a few moments there I felt happy again. biggrin

In response to those waiting for my review.  Gromit said it best:  they are remarkably unremarkable - in terms of the DVDs themselves.  No inserts and no artwork on the DVDs.

However, and that's a big however, it is after all Emergency!  You really have to watch several of the episodes to begin to appreciate the characters and how incredible their chemistry is.  Also, watch the pilot 2hr movie first as it documents how they got the paramedic program started.  It has an interesting twist in the pilot (no spoilers) where on one hand Dr. Bracket is so dead set against the program, for reasons you will see, but he is also the one most influential person who could possible sway the committee's votes to accept the program (the program is dangling so close to failure).  It's great watching everyone trying to convince Bracket to back the program and the "events" that occur that have a helping hand in his progression.  It has a really cool and dramatic ending to.  And the show is born.  Again, I cannot stress enough that it is the characters, their personalities, and their interaction with each other, that really make this show.

I'm watching the pilot episode several times before I move on to the first 1hr episode.  I'm trying my hardest to watch only one episode a week like it originally aired, but I'm going to have trouble doing that. You can follow my progress in my sig below - should you have nothing better to do.

Who wants to follow your progress in your sig?  Sheesh, I want some OMG's and some reviews!!!!  Even if no one else does besides maybe Gromit!

And, slow down - OMG, OMG, OMG, I'm so far behind!  Due to the craziness that is my life, lately, I haven't even watched the pilot yet! I feel like a traitor...  But, my dad's coming home from rehab on Wednesday, the Pup is being spayed tomorrow (maybe she'll need a little less exercise for a few days), and I've decided to play Ratchet: Deadlocked every other day, since my hands are cramping too much (damn that "no pause" feature of online play, lol!)... so maybe a little sit-down-and-relax in front of the tv is in order tonight, or very soon.  I hope so!  Tongue

My wife was a paramedic for 20+ years(She also taught EMTs to become paramedics). She started not too long  after the show came out. She was always too busy to see it but had heard of it. She really enjoyed it after I got it.It's fun listening to her critiques of  Gage,Desoto and the hospital.

Starshifter, I can resist your craziness no longer.  I had never heard of this show before your posts, but now I've got it high on the Netflix queue.  I'll be watching one a week when I get back from a trip in a month. :)

(Oh, and I showed my girlfriend the progression of your posts (starting with the Adam-12 speculation), and you've officially been called adorable by a cute red-head.)

Don't worry there sweetie!  I'm watching each episode at least three times before I move on to the next.  It's tough because I just want to watch it all in one sitting.  I'm trying my best to watch one episode per week.  If you have any questions please ask away so we can keep this Emergency! thread alive and kicking! biggrin Let me know when you get started.

So what do you think of the show dbt?  Have you been watching it too now that you have the DVD's?  Alot of people were inspired to become EMTs because of this show.  I just recently completed my first aid and cpr training and I loved it!  When I was being tested on the cpr portion I had Emergency! in my head and I was ready to start an IV with a Lidocane drip!  Some of my coworkers even asked me why I was so "into" the training.  I got Emergency! to thank for that.

Wasn't it great! biggrin  The best sound in classic television!  Instantly recognizable by many, many people who grew up in the 1970's.

And this post made my day!!!  Thankyou wonderpug's girlfriend!  Maybe I should reconsider dating again. :? (I love redhead's too!!!!!)  Yes, that Adam-12 speculation was something.  I wrote that in the morning I think and it was the early afternoon when I received the email from TVshowsondvd.com announcing Emergency! on DVD.  Man, I just snapped - in a good way, as that thread showed.

wonderpug - you will enjoy the show.  I assume you are pretty young since you never heard of the show.  It holds up really well for today (some 70's clothing & cars are noticeable, especially in the pilot, but nothing too distracting) .  The key to the show is the characters and their personalities.  They get along so well together.  The actors even mentioned this at various Emergency! conventions in the past.  Plus there is an incredible variety of "rescue situations" throughout the episodes.  And best of all is that the Squad is just so damn cool!!!  Keep me posted on your impressions!

I loved the show when it first came out and the two dozen times I saw it in reruns.Haven't seen it in 20 years I expect but the wife and I still love it. She also make mention of how they progress with their techniques and equipment as time goes by and how relatively realistic it is,given that it's TV drama.

She also said that she heard a lot of people say they were inspired to become paramedics by that show.

Drifter, you're lucky you don't have my old laptop - I keep the volume at the maximum, because most of the sounds are too low.  Therefore the ALERT didn't bring back memories - it blew the few remaining ones right out of my head! Not to mention it making my socks fly around the room!

Thanks for the "dedicated" bits, SS - believe it or not, I remember that scene with the snakebite (OMG).  I hope to watch the pilot tonight, finally.  Tongue
