This may backfire for them. Game makers enjoy being cutting edge...but primarily as a selling point. Reduce the number of people you can sell to and I'm guessing that community will be slow to incorporate 11.1.

Really? Most games I play are still written for DX 9 it seems.

But you live in a pocket universe that still believes it's 2009.

Meh, stupid short-sighted decisions but really nobody's going to care. Show me a game that only runs on it and then it might be an issue, but I imagine that will be years from now.

Not surprised, this was how they have always done things.
This won't affect us for at least 2 years though, 1 year for new consoles using the kind of tech that 11.1 supports, and another year for ports to properly implement it in PC games. But even then, DX11 is already supported in 7.

I hear Half Life 3 and System Shock 3 are going to be PC and DX 11.1 exclusive.

Remember that MS has exactly one flagship when it comes to games, and that one isn't even going to BE on PC's. Well though out plan, Microsoft...well though out plan.

This wouldn't be a problem if we weren't talking about Microsoft. Remember, this is the company that is willing to pay publishers large sums of money for no other reason than to make already planned DLC timed exclusives for the 360. In other words, MS has demonstrated that they're perfectly able and willing to screw over the customer in order to "encourage" them to move to the platform where MS wants them to be. I predict that a big 360-only game will soon be announced as coming for PC, and it will require Windows 8. My money's on Halo 4.

Sounds like a lot of other tech companies as well.

Wait, we're bitching about MS making an OS that supports DX 11.1, but not making BC the previous versions of their dev tools on their OS platform? You mean like how Siri is a 4S+-only app, even though it used to just be an app available on 3GS and iPhone 4? Yeah. Honey, get me my pitchfork- MS providing incentive to upgrade to W8 has got my knickers in a bunch. They may have good reason, or simply making DX11.1 a bullet point on the W8 box. Fact is, XP support is finally going away - the market held it open. DX11.1 isn't a thing that most people have/want right now, and if they do then they're buying video cards far too expensive to bitch about a minor cost to go to W8Pro. If DX11.1 options aren't supported, the game(s) will likely step down to DX11 - as they did for 10, and 9. Hardly worth getting worked up over.
As to DLC - they try to find a way to make their product more appealing... if you're buying their competitors product, then I guess the counter-incentive should hurt them. Oh, but don't forget the pubs and devs who ACCEPT the money for timed exclusivity, or even bigger, actual game exclusivity. Ooo, wait, they're putting money up, and in doing so providing pubs and, thusly devs resources to add content ahead of time?
Yeah, bad MS! Quick, head over to Sony camp, because they NEVER do that there. No-sir-ee!
So your mob? I'm not joining. I support both major console platforms, and each has their appeal.
Now if we're talking about blatant DLC that should be-but isn't included in the game proper, well, that's where you might see me brandishing yard-tools - but that's not something specific to one company.
