Tempted to pick up My Name is Earl Season 1 as soon as I get back from vacation (leave Friday and gone all next week) but that's just one set among many that have hit shelves in recent weeks. Otherwise a meh week. I also have never watched one frame of the new Battlestar Galactica series so don't get up in arms about me shrugging Season 2.5 off. I'll start watching that in the next few months, I just want to finish a few other seasons first.

Thankfully nothing there interests me.

And you're in the same boat, I recommend you pick up the Seven Samurai: Criterion Collection DVD set that came out a couple weeks ago.  What a fucking beautiful film.

Rest assured that one is right at the top of my list of "Must Own's Right Now." I'll pick it up week after next.

Eventually I will pick up Jigoku - Criterion Collection.
Mild interest in My Name Is Earl and Hard Candy (creeeepy!)
Someday I will buy the Battlestar sets.  Never seen the show but the hype is too strong to resist.

TML, I already own the original Criterion version of Seven Samurai and my new one is on order from Amazon.  I look forward to it!  Criterion has a lot of good Kurosawa films.  You should check them out.

I plan on it, I need to watch some more of his stuff...anything essential?

Rented Stay Alive today (have to love Albertson's $0.99 - $1.99 rentals!) and was better than I was expecting.
It was much better than other videogame movies, like say, Grandma's boy!

And love the part where the issue of Game Informer was on the racks advertising Stay Alive "A game to die for!" that was classic instead of just making up some game magazine!

I'd recommend Ran and Yojimbo over Hidden Fortress though. HF took me three days to get through because I kept falling asleep. :slywink:

As mentioned, Ran.  I enjoyed it immensely.  Be sure to get the Criterion edition.  It's the third time I've bought this film on DVD and they finally got it right.
If you want more Kurosawa-does-Shakespeare, you can check out Throne of Blood (Macbeth).
Kagemusha is just beautiful.
Rashomon is a classic that you've seen 100 rehashes of.
Of course there is Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

Of course he has plenty of other movies, even non-samurai ones!  In case you didn't already know, The Bad Sleep Well, High and Low, and Stray Dog prove that Toshiro Mifune is just badass regardless of time period!

I think Ikiru tends to be one of the more overlooked titles of Kurosawa. I love the movie - some great acting in it.

Another mercifully empty week for me.

Though I've yet to pick up the Season One set of Venture Brothers.

Spoilers incoming.....

Spoiler for Hiden:
You see who did the videogame consulting?  None other than CliffyB.   You'd figure that he'd fix the glaring errors in the movie.

e.g. "We met playing Unreal Tournament online" - uh, they were little kids, like 6 or 7.  UT came out in 1999.  That makes you 10-12 years old?
e.g. "Voice recognition, that's like Next Generation technology" Uh...no it isn't.  Seamen for the Dreamcast anyone?
e.g. What is up with the Konami code?  Non-gamers won't get why the gamers are rolling their eyes.
e.g. Premise for the movie - you die like you did in the game.   This premise was abandoned pretty much midway - free for all after this point.

That isn't to say this was the only bad part of the movie, there are more questions.  Why have the detective at all?  His plot thread went nowhere. Why can't anyone turn on lights in their house?  Since the Dev died, who got the games to shelves?  And what is up with the drug-pusher type sales tweaker in the movie?  The list goes on and on and on....

I thought it ranked marginally above House of the Dead, and that isn't a compliment.

I will agree with this 100%.  Such a fantastic movie.

Oh, and BSG 2.5 out of this week's list for me.

+1.  I actually found a copy of it at a local store that sells used DVD's.  perfect condition, only 27.99.  They were having a buy 3 get 1 free sale, so I also grabbed Smallville Season 5, 24 season 4 and the Unit for 100 bucks total.
