I just signed up for Dropbox, and it's amazing. I've knew about it for a long time, but since I'm using iDisk (a part of Apple's MobileMe service), I didn't see a need. But I decided to sign up for the hell of it (and because there's this Dropquest that gets you 1 GB of extra space for free for completing it - good until midnight PST TONIGHT! Follow those steps to complete the quest; http://mathiasbynens.be/notes/dropquest-2011) Anyway, this *blows* away iDisk, it's not even funny. And it works great on Windows, Mac and Linux, and there's an app for the iPhone/iPad and Android. If you already have it, you know how awesome it is. If not, use this referral link, http://db.tt/mUbeo9O you'll get 250 MB on top of your free 1 GB (and if you complete the quest above in time, you get another 1 GB free! Nice, eh). Disclosure: that referral link gets me 250 MB, too. So help me out here, and post your referral link here, too!

I use it occasionally for, uh, completely legal things....
Actually, my family initially set up a dropbox account so that we could easily share pictures and the like. We even set up the screen saver on my grandmother's computer to cycle through all the pictures in the dropbox folder. So she constantly gets updated pictures hassle free.

I've been using it for a few years now and I'm up to 5GB of free space and I love it. It's like a cloud version of a USB disk.

I use DropBox, and it's great. I also use MobileMe, but I use iDisk and Drop Box for different things. I'll put things up on iDisk that I want to link to on the Web. I also use Apple Backup to save key files there nightly. Dropbox is used for file transfers on and off my iOS devices.
I'm also a big fan of Evernote and 1Password.

Agreed, Dropbox is brilliant. I love it. I don't use the app on my phone though, seems like a security risk since you only authenticate once - or has that changed?

Remember it also does versioning!
I've put hundreds of students on it simply to use as backup.

If you install the client, you can have your files offline too and any changes will sync with the server as soon as you're back online.

To the two people who signed up via my link; thanks!!! We can get up to 8 GB extra via referrals, so we could get 10 GB for free if we trade referrals.
For using my referral, you get 250 MB to yourself, too, so it's win-win!
I'll pipe up when I'm at my maximum so you don't waste a referral. Post yours here, so we can all benefit!

I even use it as my "My Documents" folder for work. And I have stuff in there (contact, network info) that I use for work so I can easily get to it on my Droid X.
Love it and it's become indispensable for me and my wife.

Dropbox is great and pretty much a no-brainer but I've actually stopped using it and switched to SugarSync. Sugarsync starts you off with 5gb free space for an account. I also like the fact that they have a $5/month plan that gives you 30 GB (more than enough for lots of online photos, etc for me) where Dropbox's paid plans start at $10/month for 50 GB. It does require a bit more user involvement so it's not really for grandmas, etc.

What kind of user involvement does Sugarsync require that's more than Dropbox?

Everyday. I use the Dropbox utility on my Macbook pro. Every file I save to the dropbox directory is automatically synced online. I'm a writer and having a good backup is essential. I only use it for documents. I haven't ever tried it for other types of files. I even have drop box on my ipad.

Not much. Dropbox is pretty simple and SugarSync aims for that but is a bit rougher around the edges. They also have a lot more features available and make it easy to set things up like I have it: a "Photos" folder that syncs across three computers and a "Sync" folder that syncs across only two of those three computers. Those folders could conceivably be anywhere on your system (not limited to a "My Dropbox" folder for example).

I just learned that you can get another 768mb free by linking your social sites to it.
I'll need to confirm the link, but iirc, it's dropbox.com/free
that sugar sync sounds useful too. You have to muck about with symlinks to get that freedom with dropbox.

Yep, no problem. I've did them all, except for the Facebook one (because I don't have an account).

I've got a Dropbox account, but I'm partial to Windows Live Mesh 2011 ( http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mesh ) - Totally free - There are Windows and Mac clients - You can sync multiple folders between computers - the content doesn't have to live within a single root folder a la Dropbox. - 5 GB of your synced content can be backed up SkyDrive as well
