And I finally went to that site and looked up the cast.  I was always under the assumption that Laurana was a 12 on 1-10 scale in looks.  There is only one person on the planet that would be correct for that role then, and they didn't get her.

Holy crap! That really was something awful. There was a sliver of hope somewhere in there, but that trailer pretty much crushed it. I think they may have forgotten to hire people who can actually draw characters (because really, who cares about the main cast anyways), and instead just got some folks to sculpt CGI dragons up the wazoo. Awesome!

Yeah I never read the books but I'm always up for a good fantasy type flick.  From the trailer, I wouldn't even Tivo this.

Its much much worse for a generation who's first taste of 'pulp-ish' type fantasy was the Dragonlance series. It may not have the staying power of the classics, but we have such fond memories of these stories and the characters that inhabited Krynn. It's like taking one of your fondest childhood/teen memories and pissing all over it

Agreed and ditto.  I'd never even heard of Tolkien at that age...of course if I had, I'd have probably turned my nose up at these stories. But as it was, I loved the stories, loved the world and loved the books.

And, KD,  what was wrong with the old D&D cartoon. I enjoyed that show as a kid. Venger was teh manz!

Dragonlance got me into the D&D books in general.  Since then, I've become a hardcore Forgotten Realms guy.  Oh, and Ron, the books you were thinking of with the cleric/MacGyver guy is a series of books called The Cleric Quintet.  Good series.

I can only hope that this thing doesn't make any money so they don't attempt it with my beloved Forgotten Realms characters.  I would rather them stay on their pages than be ruined on screen.

Ok, now, I figured this movie would be really lousy just from reading the website when this thread first came around. I really thought the film would be low-budget lame animation, a train wreck in the making.

I seriously can't think of what to say to convey just how awful this looks. It looks so bad that I won't even find it entertaining to watch explicitly for the purpose of mocking how bad it is. It looks PAINFUL.

Yes, I have it.  I need to get my review written but let me say this - prepare to have your childhood stepped on.

Remember when Riverwind dies a horrible and agonizing death at the hands (or talons) of Onyx the Black Dragon?  Yea...somehow that just doesn't happen.  The animation feels like a mixture of the original Dungeons & Dragons cartoon and Transformers: Beast Wars, and that isn't a compliment.  Jerky hardly describes it. Stay away...stay far far away.

My memories of both the Dragonlance Chronicles and the Cleric Quintet are both fantastic.  I even at one point bought the books-on-tape version of 'Dragons of Autumn Twilight' (read by the extremely good Peter MacNicol who sounds exactly like Roddy McDowell from Planet of the Apes).

So thanks for the warning, Ron.  I won't spoil my fond memories with this garbage. 

On a related note (sort of)... Has anyone read the Lost Chronicles stuff?  Are they any good?

I read the first one awhile ago (Dwarven Depths).  Basically, it's more Dragonlance.  If you like Chronicles and Legends, you'll like these.  I seem to remember that the story was decent, and the writing seemed improved.  I tried re-reading Chronicles a few years ago and couldn't make it through the first book for the writing.  I actually made it all the way through Dwarven Depths, if that tells you anything.  It might just have been the sheer novelty of new DL stuff from Weis and Hickman, though.
