I didn't mean to imply the writing is poor... far from it. But, the plots are far less engaging than the characters, dialog, and scenery (for me).

When I finish with series 4, I am going to give "Upstairs, Downstairs" a try. I have heard some fans describe Downton Abbey as "Upstairs, Downstairs for morons". smile

I prefer the original 1970's Upstairs, Downstairs more than Downton Abbey, perhaps because Downton seems like a knockoff of U,D to me.  I would definitely give U,D a try if you like Downton.  They did a new U,D that brought back one of the original characters a couple of years ago, but it wasn't very good so it only lasted 2 seasons.

I avoided this show for no particular reason for the longest time, but this holiday break I broke down and started watching and promptly became hooked.  I'm somewhere in the middle of the third season and just loving it.  Maggie Smith just cracks me up to no end, and the couple episodes with Shirley Maclaine interacting with her were priceless.

I think the main thing to draw me in, though, was Dan Stevens, who I saw in The Guest (a campy movie but worth watching just to see his performance, he's just so freaking sexy).  It's a bit annoying for me to know he leaves the show, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers on exactly when and how his character goes out.

I guess the 5th season just started airing in the US last night, curious if anyone here is still following?

I loved the first season, tolerated the second, and dropped out after the third. My wife's still heavily into it though. From her synopsis it sounds like the 5th season has degenerated into self-parody.

Huh, didn't get that at all.

Apart from Edith's dramatic moping (which seemed pointless right up until it had a point), I found the episode quite enjoyable and back to good form.

For a real self-parody:

Part Two

I take it for what it is. You can't blame a melodrama for being melodramatic.

My wife and I really enjoy the show (I never thought it'd be my cup of tea).  We've seen all episodes, including the season that just started slywink. My friends get envious of that and many thumb drives have been sent my way... Lol

Nooooooooo!!!!  Damn Season 3 finale  icon_mad icon_mad icon_mad

Even though I knew it was coming at some point, it was still painful to watch.  I think I'm gonna go watch The Guest a few more times to cheer myself up.
