Watched the Day of the Doctor last night, and I really enjoyed it.  Quite satisfying.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Could have used a little more from the other doctors, but I get that would have bogged the episode down.  Loved seeing Tom Baker at the end, though his appearance was decidedly odd.  His bizarre/playful Harpo side was out in full force.  Even though it made no real sense at all, it was a fun little button on the episode.

Just saw it myself. Very good!!
Spoiler for Hiden:
I agree about it needing more doctors.. Could have made it a 2-2.5 hour movie and would have been fine...

Simply magnificent. By far the best anniversary or multi-Doctor story ever. I loved it.

No matter how batshit crazy the storyline can get in any Doctor Who episode, the people who make this show always find a way to make it entertaining, brilliant, emotional, and funny. And it always seems to tie in with everything, as in the whole big picture of things in the WHO universe.

I was a bit confused at the beginning.  it felt like there was a unexplained jump between the end of the last regular episode and the beginning of the special.

I kind of want them to jump back and do a few seasons of the 8th doctor on TV. I know he's done radio plays, but that short time on screen was great, and a far cry from the crappy TV Movie that showed up here in the states (which I watched).

Spoiler for Hiden:
I'm sad he didn't show up in the anniversary episode. However, his part in bringing about John Hurt's doctor was done.

Also, good to see Gallefrey has a chance of coming back, especially since the Daleks escaped everything anyway which seemed to me like the time war and the doctor's actions there rendered moot.

Yeah, I was hoping for more of Clara hopping into past Doctor's lives.  Honestly, I thought that's what the episode was going to be about.  Especially when it started with the original opening and went into Clara in a 60's school.  Getting on board with what was actually happening was a little jarring.

Quickly caught up with it, though.

Barring Eccleston, everyone still kicking got to be part of the celebration. 5-8 did a 30 minute video where they protest about not being in the episode, with a John Barrowman cameo. 8 got to do Night of the Doctor.

And by accounts I've read, 9 was decent about turning it down, but I'm still beginning to think he's a bit of a tool.

I'm suspecting that, too.  There are rumors that his decisions were based on homophobia, and that doesn't help, either, but even if not, he's just been kind of a dick about it.

As for the others, it was nice to see them involved in the offshoot stuff (I didn't watch all of that 30 minute thing that Davison made, but what I saw was amusing), but there was a perfect opportunity to actually use them in the special itself.  Of course, they generally don't look the same at all anymore, so maybe it would have been an issue.

Once you get a look at them, it's easy to see how trying to shoehorn a bunch of old white guys back into the old costumes would have completely ruined any immersion you were trying to build.

Heck, it looked like Tennant had to be sewn into that suit. I'd have to go back and look at his episodes, but I don't remember the buttons looking that stressed at the time.

Perhaps it was just all the running he had to do in the beginning, as the outdoorsy parts are where I noticed it.

Great episode, and I'm just a casual watcher at that, so there were many references I didn't get. But overall, very good. Just wondering:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Who was John Hurt's doctor regenerating into at the end? I got the impression that he was an early doctor, possibly even earlier than Hartnell though without any screen appearance until now. So, I half expected him to regenerate into Hartnell, which would have been a nice way to use Bradley again.

His parting line is about hoping that his ears aren't so prominent.
Spoiler for Hiden:

He was a changeover from the 8th doctor, so next up is the 9th.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Mark Gattis' docudrama An Adventure in Space and Time. The final scene actually moves me to tears. I just teared up again showing the scene to my wife.

I just watched it myself, and I agree, it ended on a very somber note.  They did a great job portraying Hartnell; I wonder if they'd ever consider re-shooting the lost episodes with David Bradley filling in.  It'd be a great tribute to fill in the missing episodes that so many worked hard on.

Finally watched AiT&S last night and thought it was fantastic.

I don't know that it was somber at the end.  Bittersweet, maybe.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Looking over and seeing Matt Smith started the waterworks for me, but it was a hopeful moment.  Hartnell was able to see the legacy he began and understood his place in it.

OK, it's Christmas...so when is this special supposed to air? Or did I miss it already? My DVR seems perpetually confused about what constitutes a "new" Dr Who episode.

Currently looking for a way to watch it. My DVR let me down, I don't see anyplace to watch it online, and the BBC America schedule didn't show any rebroadcast times during the brief time that I checked. Would like to see this before the new season starts up.

I enjoyed the episode but wouldn't rate it as a great one.  I did like all the references (especially to the psychopathic women in his life).  It did suffer a bit being so closely compared to the 50th anniversary episode.

Speaking of that, Tivo recorded the Christmas rebroadcast and listed it as new.  It was the same episode, but it had a brief introduction scene showing the Doctor regenerating into Hurt.  I have no idea where that came from.

it was a mini-episode released on the web.  It was released just before the 50th anniversary special, forgeforsaken posted a link to it around then.

The episode was merely ok, but Matt got a nice exit speech, and it just reemphasizes how poorly Tennant went out when you compare his regeneration to Matt's and Eccleston's.

I thought Tennant's exit was fantastic, actually.  The three knocks thing was perfectly set up and heartbreaking in its reveal and the clearly heartfelt, underplayed comment of "I don't want to go" was perect.

No chat about the new Doctor?

I had (accidentally) read some uberfan grumblings before seeing the first episode of the new season, but I enjoyed Capaldi a lot.  The story of the episode was a little lackluster, maybe, but it really was more about finding out about him, so that didn't bother me.
Spoiler for Hiden:
Plus a giant dino vomiting up the TARDIS was great, topped only by Capaldi's first Doctor line: "Shush."

Good stuff. I was expecting dour and a little angry, but he was fun and a fun mess, too.  I look forward to delving more into who he is and why.  On that, I will make a bold prediction here: This is all leading to the return of the Doctor Donna.  This hunch occurred to me before the season started, and little signs in the episode were certainly pointing that way, if only because Donna was the companion in the Pompeii episode (in which "that face" appeared, of course).

The first half was just a complete mess.  The second half was a bit better, but what the hell, Moffat?  I remember when you used to write coherent, fun stories.  Now you're so obsessed with being the British Joss Whedon that you're sacrificing any attempt at a sensical story to the gods of the story arc...and them gods ain't helpin' ya.

Please, just go back to being the guy who wrote Blink.  Please?

Martha had a few good stories in her run, but as a companion? Bleck. Her only character arc was "I think the Doctor's dreamy," and that's it.
