I had never thought about it before yesterday. And I worked at one as a kid.
Anyways we took Betsy in to have her washed and she was blackened with filth. The guy doing the inside worked a good 20 minutes on it. So he holds up his hand that its ready and as Im walking out it hits me to tip him. Never done it before or thought about it. Maybe it was the way he was standing there or how much work I watched him do. So I handed him $2. I wanted to give him $5 but didn't have a 5. So I get in the car and I have the wife open her do and give him another $1.
Is $3 good for a wash tip? It was not hand washed but the inside took a bit of muscle. Is there no tip? Im stumped. But I feel better for tipping.

From what I've seen there's usually a specific place / container for tips (rather than handing it to someone directly) and they are shared AFAIK. And I always tip people like that unless they give me a good reason not to or to regret it.

I only ever wash my own car. I thought automatic car washes were, well, automated.

I usually tip $2-3 as well, but maybe if the guy had to do a lot of work and really did a great job, $5 isn't out of the question.

Outside = automatic, inside not so much. And then there's all that pesky drying, too.

Yes always tip. But most places have a community spot. If I get special extra service like additional vacuum, matt wash, or tire shine I hand the tip to the guy. I usually do about $3 bucks and if I get extras and I am pleased with the extra work I will go up to 5.

I usually tip a fiver. The place I go does an outstanding job on the interior and to me it's worth the price of a couple beers at the bar.

2 or 3...depending on how he works.
If I go the full hand wax route, I will generally tip BEFORE he starts...hopefully to insure a good job.

Like any other job where you hire someone to perform a service, it's appropriate to tip based on the cost. If you're paying $20 for a car wash, a $4 tip is appropriate. If I pay $150 for a full detail, I'll tip 30 bucks.

Tip? Whoops. But I also go to a little place near work where I get a car wash (automatic) and an inside vacuum for like $20. There's also a tip jar, but the crew don't ask for it otherwise.

This sounds right to me. In the same vein, how much do you tip for a haircut? I go to Supercuts and they bumped the price to $15. I used to tip $3 when the cut was $13-14. But now that it's $15 it feels awkward asking for change for $20 to not give a $5 tip.

I tip $3 on a $13.95 haircut, which would be the same for a meal of that cost. I figure that I get the same amount of service, just over a much reduced timeline.
I sacked groceries on an AFB (tips only, no wages) '94-'95. The standard to not aggravate us was $1 per normally loaded cart (8 bags). We could usually stretch one to hold 12 in a pinch ($1.25-$1.50) , anything more would require two. Getting shafted was never fun, and the competition to edge up to the known big tippers was fierce (and often unfair).

I thought of that line, too. That philosophy usually pays pretty good dividends when I go out drinking. The bartender will usually bring me a tumbler of whatever new bourbon or whiskey the distributors try to pitch to him when I sit down.
