I like this forum, but I like avatar availability at Octopus Overlords.  What's a guy gotta do to get some avatar lovin' here?

I like this forum a lot more, as I have said many times. I think avatars, while completely silly and superfluous, are a lot of fun if kept to a reasonable size and adhere to the non-gross parts of the CoC. I think me and ThinJ will have to share a picture of Calvin smile

Yes.

And Rage, I never bother with using the same avatar across different boards so sharing won't be an issue slywink. While that's my Avatar at OO, I have several others, a few of which have no purpose at the moment. I'll likely use one of those other images here, at least I will if it's enabled slywink

I can go either way with avatars, but they do help me identify posters better.  I just don't like the images in a sig as that gets really distracting.

I've always kinda liked avatars.  It gives me a face to associate with the name.

Avatars would be neat, if kept to a reasonable size, and were easy to setup, for morons like myself.

The other thing would be making sure that they are work safe....we have a lot of people who post at work.  Most avatars are OK, but it's something we have to take a look at.

I think Ron would have to look at the amount of bandwidth that might take up as well.

Bandwidth wouldn't be an issue if they were hosted off-site.

Yes we need the Avatars but I fear we are not yet ready for them. We can finally put an end to the good vs evil and live in Utopia!

I think it's be kind of fun to have some. I'd prefer they were kept relatively small and not too tasteless.

If you give me the option to disable avatars on my screen I'll make my no a yes. Avatars (even clean ones) make the site a bit less work friendly.

Personally I'm not a big fan of avatars, but I'm pretty sure this is the exact setup they used over at OO.

It's doable for sure (I've done it over at OO).  Nice bonus is that the same mod gives the option for disabling sigs as well.  The other thing we did was limit the avatars to a set pixel size, file size, and jpgs only (to keep out the animated ones).

There are some other mods that enable an "approval" process for avatars, but considering how often folks change them, it could get very cumbersome quickly.

Well, my concern would be that they could be easily disabled for folks who are on low-speed connections or simply don't want to see them for some reason.  Is it a user-toggled setting?  I don't want to inconvenience folks who don't want to see them...

Per user toggle (in the profile), and the setting can be defaulted to on or off depending on what the preference is.

Same boat here. While I am a quick-clicker, I still have management sneaking up on me on occassion. No avatars make it look like something possibly work-related so it never gets a second glance. But a half-nekked women, even in a small avatar, throws up "skin-ahoy!" flag.

Fair enough - the mod is easy enough to install so I'm told, I just need to discuss it with the team.  Give us a bit of time and I'll make a decision.  The only way we'll allow it is if each user can turn it off.  smile

I say it would be a good thing, as as stated above, it helps to identify who's speaking. And it gives some 'insight' into the person as well.

But only if they could be turned on/off at the global level per each user's account, for the also as stated jobs where one's bandwith sucks.

And obviously no avatars that violate our rules, either.

I like them.

Makes it quick to scan for a post from a particular person, or if you can't remember if you answered a particular post.

Also makes the post a little more personal and some are downright funny.

We have agreed to turn on the Avatar system.  That said, we will be closly monitoring the avatars in use when we do.  They must comply with the rules.

We will turn the Avatar system on in the next few weeks when we can install the mod to allow users to turn them off per their individual preference.

Any final comments or questions should be addressed here.  Thanks for the input guys, we are always looking to serve your needs better.

Yep, we are upgrading the forums to .13 early next week - the avatar mod will go in place at that point.

I moved the maintenace window up to Saturday morning.  Avatars have been enabled.  You can find out more information (technical requirements, content restrictions, and avatar/sig disabling instructions) in this thread located in the Forum and Site Feedback forum.

Time to spread the Cthulhuian love.  Of course, this is actually ripped from the guardian in Master of Orion 2, but hey, who's counting?
