I wonder if we'll see a Thanksgiving release for VII since Disney probably doesn't want anything taking away the spotlight from Avengers 2. of course the 2015 release date effectively removes Whedon from the equation.

Yeah, Disney can be dark when it wants to be. The Black Hole was pretty dark for a Disney movie.
Not to mention Something Wicked This Way Comes. (Damn, I need to watch that movie again) And I like Tron: Legacy, dammit! Love TRON: Legacy as well, and you are absolutely right. Marvel being taken over by Disney was the best thing that could ever happen to them, and they have some very, very good movies afterwards. Yep, I do like Tron: Legacy too. I thought it was a rather good sequel. In fact, I think more sequels should strive for a similar quality. It respected the original movie while pushing forward. Not an easy thing to do after so long a period between movies. I think they did reasonably well.

with all the suddenness of this coupled with his statements that he wanted to make sure Star Wars was in good hands and the like plus the fact he is donating a majority of it has me beginning to wonder if he just found out that he is dying.

Hasn't he always been saying he's going to give his fortune away? Or I am thinking of someone else?

More likely that he knows it's a necessity, kind of like the necessity of a will. With Lucasfilm being as big as it is, I think it only makes sense to secure it when he has a chance, rather than having him die and having lawyers sort everything out and figuring who gets it, which would likely end up being a huge bidding war, and I don't think he wants to see that. I don't think it's anything more than that. Apparently this has been talked with investors for months.

According to Wiki, he announced earlier this year that he was done with blockbuster movies and wanted to focus on smaller independant films. My guess is he'll take a bit of that money and start a new smaller film house that organized around that business model.

some interesting speculation based off some news from earlier this year. Big news today for movie nerds. Deadline reports that filmmaker Brad Bird and fan-favorite film writer Damon Lindelof are teaming up for a new project at Disney. Bird, coming off of his first live-action with Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, is set to direct the mysterious large scale sci-fi project 1952. Whether that's just a codename or an actual year related to the story, we're not yet sure, but the project "has multi-platform aspirations" meaning Disney wants it for theme parks, retail stores and theaters. It'll no doubt be a "big tentpole" movie, and with these two storytellers leading the way, it is definitely something to watch for. I can see where the fan spec is coming in.

That's what I was inferring. I don't want that hack anywhere near a Star Wars screenplay.

15 potential directors for Episode 7 (out of probably hundreds ). if the previous link I posted earlier turns out to be nothing but fan spec then, out of all of them on the list, I'd like to see either Brad Bird or Jon Favreau. I know Matthew Vaughn has bowed out on the next X-Travesty, but that is because he has another project he's working on, so I doubt we'd see him. don't really care for Alfonso Cuaron, and David Yates made my least favorite Harry Potter films. Zack Snyder? right Seth MacFarlane has potential but may end up with too tight of a leash if they were concerned he might try and make the films too humorous. I think Guillermo del Toro may be too tied up with other stuff to commit. I agree with the article about Christopher Nolan, he may not want to commit to a big series again so soon. Joe Johnston seems more comfortable with retro films. J.J. Abrams did great things for Star Trek, but if he's in contract for more Star Trek films after the next he might not have the time. the others on the list I really haven't paid any attention to.

interesting info: Fox owns the distribution rights to Episode 4 for, like, ever, and owns rights to all other 5 films until May 2020: But Fox owns distribution rights to the original Star Wars, No. 4 in the series, in perpetuity in all media worldwide. And as for the five subsequent movies, Fox has theatrical, nontheatrical and home video rights worldwide through May 2020.

TBH i think it would feel off to listen to the Opening Star Wars theme without the 20th Century Fox music before hand does that mean 3D Episodes 2 and 3 are still on for next September and October?

Harrison Ford (now 70) is apparently open to a return Han Solo appearance, perhaps stipulating they kill his ass off. I'm sure that'll go over as well as Jamie Lee Curtis returning to Halloween: Resurrection so she could get whacked in a ridiculous pre-credits sequence. No truth to the rumor Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner will crawl out of his grave to direct the latest Star Wars movie...

Even if they appear, there's pretty much next to no chance they'll be anything more than supporting characters in the story, a way to bridge the old episodes into the new ones.

Both Harrison Ford and Princess Leia are active and sound of mind and Ford is still acting in movies every year and is a pretty good actor as well. Because: 1) The Star Wars movies are family movies. Having old people as main characters wouldn't appeal to the younger generations. 2) The Star Wars movies are action movies. That doesn't work well with such old actors. 3) It's been such a long time since the last movie (as in chronologically last, ie. Episode 6) that continuing the story of the main characters in these new episodes is unnecessary. They are better off introducing new, younger characters, with the old ones in mentor roles. 4) After the events of Episode 6, I find it extremely unlikely that Han Solo, Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia will find themselves in situations that call for much direct action by them. Luke is going to be busy rebuilding the Jedi order and working more as a teacher than as a soldier. Leia will return to politics, the area where her heart always was, or help Luke. Han Solo will become a leader in the New Republic Order, either as a politician or as a military commander (Admiral, most likely). This splits up the main characters from the old trilogy and makes it hard for them to be directly involved in anything.

The Expendables - In Spaaaaaaaace! What wonderpug posted. I'm afraid if they bring them back, it's gonna be some sort of gimmick. I would rather they came up with a brand new trilogy with fresh characters and mythology.
