That's a good point.  I was thinking the same about Han; who could play it better than 1970s Harrison Ford?!  Obi-Wan at least could benefit from being much younger so a different actor would make sense.  Han Solo will be basically the same age as when we met him in Ep4.

There's not much in the way of surprise here, given that there's been chat already about new standalone Star Wars films to run alongside the currently-planned Star Wars: Episodes VII to IX. But Disney has now officially confirmed that that's what it's up to.

The official word came at the firm's annual shareholder's meeting, which took place in Phoenix. And Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the company is developing "some standalone movies" that will feature Star Wars characters.

deal closed to keep them informed, Lucas said, “We had already

Meh.  Most of the EU was shit anyway. 

Also, it's not exactly like George hadn't already ignored a huge chunk of EU material (not to mention his own) when he did the prequels.

Yeah, this is nothing new. The EU has always played second fiddle to the movie canon, and George Lucas has happily overridden the EU when he felt like it. The article linked to above seems hysteric and rambling, and makes certain logical mistakes (how does canceling The Clone Wars in any indicate that the EU is being discarded? And what does the Clone Wars cartoon have to do with the EU anyway? It's a step above that in the canon hierarchy). Too long has the EU been all about the characters seen in the previous movies, to the point where the entire thing has become a parody of itself. If some (or all) of it has to go, I certainly won't shed any tears.

As long as the quality is good, I don't see a problem with this. It was also part of the original news story when the purchase of Lucasfilm was first announced, but hey.

There's plenty of room for new stories in the Star Wars universe, and it's not like we've been drowned in new quality material over these last 20 years.
