What is up with this thing? It takes 3 seconds to respond to an input from the remote, and sometimes it doesn't respond at all.

I can't find anywhere to set my preferences for the screensaver.

Trying to set a custom channel lineup is a royal PITA.

I agree. It's the worst I've ever seen. Frustrating as hell.

Hopefully the Tivo boxes aren't too far away.

Is it made by Scientific Atlanta (or something along those lines)?  For some reason the performance on the one I have from them has gone to hell recently, pretty much the same issues you are describing.

Honestly never even looked. I don't leave it paused long enough to come up very often.

It blows.  However the rest of DirecTV is so awesome that it makes up for it.

This is debatable...I am incredible unhappy with my DirecTV.  Just got yet another rate increase notice.  I loose signal all the time just when the wind blows and the repair technician never finds anything wrong with the install of the dish.

I could certainly do without rate hikes, but it's still reasonably priced and competitive with other solutions.  Never had a problem with the Dish itself, and we've had some hellacious rain/wind storms lately.

I'm having problems with my dish right now. Channels I used to get that were clear are now completely eaten by static. Just had my house tented, though, so I have a feeling the dish may have been shifted a little when they did that. Need to get somebody out here to realign the thing. What a pain.

I can still throw!!

I never lost the signal all day, through 2 feet if snow and wind.

Trapped in the house so I had the tv on in the background and not single "searching for signal" or static.

Well I must live in the middle of avdead zone then. It is frustrating enough that I am likely switching to com cast soon. I pay over $100 for the hd DVD plus hd programming without any of the premium channels. I added HBO to watch 24/7 which added another $15 to the bill. DirecTV claims they have no cheaper programming package because I have an old package that no longer exists.

I will be going to Comcast triple play, will get faster Internet (currently on dsl) and better programming than I get now for about $70 less.

How does that happen?

The most expensive package is $112 and it has EVERY premium channel (and every other channel).

Throw in HD and it probably bumps it up $10-$15.

I've had great luck calling them and getting money off everything. You should at least get your HD and DVR free if you call.  If you don't get a good signal, that's a different story.

I'd eat my own leg before I went to Comcast for TV.

The plan I am on is a "grandfathered" plan because I got my DirecTV through Verizon three years ago as a part of the Verizon Triple Freedom.  Every few months DirecTV raises my rates by a few bucks.  When I asked about switching because it looked to me like the plans they offer now would be cheaper, they said the online pricing didn't include all of the fees.  So there was a plan that got more channels than I currently get for something like $75 a month, but then they would tack on DVR rental fees, monthly protection plan fees which they claim I couldn't waive, a fee for the right to pay them money to watch PPV, which I never use but they said was a required fee, plus a fee to lease the receiver.  In the end the plan came to be roughly $110.

My most recent service call, I had lost all HD stations, they insisted my dish was out of alignment.  They sent a tech out, and in the end the problem was that somehow both b-band converters died at the same exact time.

Before moving to my current house I had Comcast digital cable and never had a single issue with it, but it wasn't available at my new place thus why I went with satellite.

I HATE the Directv box. I read that the newer one is much faster but it is $200. The rest of the service is great. In the 18 months we have had it, we have never lost signal and I live in near Seattle where it is grey 75% of the time. The DISH box we had was great but the signal with them was crap.

I have the Directv HDDVR and it slows way down if the unit gets too hot. I have to make sure that it's not sitting on or under another heat producing device. Giving it plenty of room to breathe seems to help its speed.

I also find it speeds up after you empty out most of your recorded shows.  I've had mine down to less than 20% available and then cleaned out the junk and watched a bunch of stuff, afterward everything seemed more responsive.

DTV replaced my HD DVR receiver recently for free because one of the ports went out on the one I had.  Technician told me it was the latest/greatest, an HR24-500.  It's actually quite decent.  I was having a lot of the same issues you guys were having (i.e. slow menu response time, some dropped recordings) with my older one.  My relatives have comcast and that DVR sucks big time.

It's still no TiVo though.  I used to have all TiVo on directv and it was better.  Thinking about going with the TiVo upgrade when it eventually comes out.

We are seriously considering ditching DTV entirely, as their rates just went up another few bucks a month.  We've been subscribers for 10 years.  If we changed our minds next fall and wanted to go back, what are the chances they wouldn't demand we pay the $200 fee for an HD-DVR all over again?  I'm guessing pretty tiny.
