Retirement for Veterans

Thanks very much for your service. I've got a few ex-military folks in my line of work that I know, and not one of them has been unsuccessful - though I do think they hold themselves to an unfairly high standard sometimes! I'm sure that whatever you get into you'll do well for yourself.

And so my journey ends, was just served my separation orders today. Retirement is dated for February 14, 2013. I have over 60 days leave so Dec 27 is my last day I will ever be in formation.
I've been expecting retirement for a while, but now that its actually happening I feel horrible in the pit of my stomach. 
I have bitched and moaned about the service for almost twenty years, but in truth I will miss it more than anything.

Thanks for your service, Kato.   Going to full time civilian will be a transition, but there is always Reserve duty if you still have the itch

A childhood friend of mine is retiring shortly after 15 years in the marines.  Before that he was in the Air Force for 10, I believe.  While he's sorry to see that part of his life end, he's anxious to see what's waiting for him in the civilian world. 

I know you'll do great whatever you decide.  Of course, you can always return to your life as professional male stripper to the stars.  I don't believe they've ever been able to find anyone else who can do the "Triple Lindy, Single Hand Stand, Squat Thrust" since you hung up your thong.

Well done, enter into thy rest.  It was bitter-sweet for me also. My youngest son joined up 3 years ago and whenever I go to a parade or see him graduate a course, I still get a lump in my throat and have nostalgic feelings of my time in all day long. He even joined the same trade, Artilery, so hearing him talk about the guns gets me emotional at times.
There are no closer bonds you make than with your troop buddies. We had a gun crew with about 6 of us. We worked the same gun together for years. I can still tell you what each of the guys likes and dis-likes were. Closer than brothers really.

So I stand smartly to attention, snap you my best Canadian salute, and say thank you. Be proud, carry your head high, the future is bright for you.

Congrats Kato!  Thank you for all of the sacrifices, seperation, and hard times you endured during your career.  I know it will be tough to say goodbye to active duty, but man, you've earned it, and then some.

The 2 jobs I've had since I left the Corps were both because of veteran Marines that hired me.  We look out for each other, regardless of industry or walk of life.

Good job Kato and you'll be fine.  My wife retires in Jan (yes, we are dual military) and I'll give you the same advice I'm giving her.  Take some time for yourself, you've given enough to earn it.
