I absolutely love sci fi movies and there are sooooo few decent ones that when one comes along that looks to be some what palatable, I can't contain myself.

Has anyone seen it or heard much about it?  All I have seen are the trailers, but they look sweet.  Can't wait.

Netflix should ship this Blu-ray tomorrow. I've been excited to see it since the previews and listening to Danny Boyle on The Treatment podcast. I'm curious about the ending though since everything I've heard says that it's a bit fof a letdown.

I knew almost nothing about this until I read about it a few days ago and frankly it sounds really, really cool. Hope Netflix sends it this week.

IIRC, this is the movie I hear compares unfavorably with Event Horizon...

It does have a very familiar feel with Event horizon. I enjoyed it. It starts off a bit slow but quickly ramps up.

Maybe the other way around.  I thought Event Horizon was terrible.  I really enjoyed the ending of Sunshine.  Almost as good as the middle smile

I thought Sunshine started off great, ramped up very well, and then fell right the hell off the rails near the end.  As soon as...

Spoiler for Hiden:
the captain of the other ship comes out like the boogeyman

I thought the movie fell apart there. :/

I almost saw Sunshine in the theaters but wisely chose to see Live Free or Die Hard instead.  I did put it in my Netflix queue though.

Let me derail for a sec- Netflix- has anyone noticed that there is no longer one big page for movies released this week?   According to the faq it is somewhere but for the life of me, i can't find it.

Anyone know how to view that page again?

Ignoring the ludicrously bad science in the movie, I absolutely loved it. I watched it last night on Blu-Ray and I can't get it out of my head this morning. I sort of agree that when
Spoiler for Hiden:
Pinbacker shows up it takes a bit away from the movie, but I think that was used as an allegory about God (predestination) and Science (our fate can be changed). Pinbacker represents fundamentalism and the belief that we're MEANT to die, while Capa represents hope in Science.

I give it a solid *** 1/2 out of **** and have to put it on my top 10 list for the last year.

I just finished watching it and enjoyed it a lot. Absolutely gorgeous imagery and effects, well worth watching just for that. It's definitely a great addition to the sci-fi genre and offers something different for a change. Great cast too, I really liked how all of the characters were more individual through little touches and their behaviours. It looked like your typical save the world kind of crew but they actually took the time to give each person more uniqueness than usual. There is the one plotline that really detracted from the rest of the movie though, which is the Event Horizon deal, but I can go with jblank's spoiler explanation on that. I think that part could have been toned down some though and not been so forced (note on that in spoiler below).

Spoiler for Hiden:
It felt like the film devolved into a slasher flick for 20 minutes with Pinbacker's make-up, stalking the crew, and jarring switch in camera style. It seemed excessive and clashed pretty hard with the rest of the film I thought.

Great film though and a must see on high-def. 4/5 for me.

Definitely a haunting movie. Lovely and full of thought provoking themes.

A couple things really bothered me and I'm usually one to suspend disbelief first, drive trucks through gaping plotholes second but:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Two things really bothered me. 1) Why did Trey make the STUPID mistake of not correcting the shield angle and how did this slip past Icarus? Why wasn't this double-checked by anyone - like Kaneda for example, or even Cassie? I'm assuming they're both qualified navigators. 2) WTF did Icarus NOT warn the crew about an additional UNKNOWN crewmember being on board? I just had the feeling Icarus was omnipotent. Also she fought to take control of the ship during the shield repair sequence and had to be overridden. Wouldn't she have realized the error in the course alteration? I did read that Trey was hyper-conscientious and competent and that he felt he had to do the work himself and not trust the work to the computer, but that still doesn't wash with me.

I still enjoyed the movie and I look forward to checking out the commentaries by the director and science adviser.

Just finished watching it, and I'll endorse the "really good 'till it goes off the rails in the third act" sentiment. Not sure why they couldn't have left it at "somebody makes a mistake and it snowballs to entire jeopardy for the whole mission." Watching people fall apart or rise to the occasion under intense stress is entertaining in its own right. Throwing in a Boogeyman = FTL. Definitely reminiscent of Event Horizon, though it does hold up better overall.

Not sure if I'll bother with commentaries on this one. Maybe the director's, just to see what he was thinking with the third act.

I picked this up at Blockbuster. I enjoyed it but didn't think it was great. I agree that the last third was a let down. It would have been better to have left it at them trying to complete the mission due to technical problems. No need for the other stuff. For me it was a good rental, but I doubt I'd buy it unless the transfer was stellar in BluRay. It had some great visuals and could be good to show off an HD system.

Loved it.  While the direction of the third act was slightly disappointing after the awesome first two acts, Danny Boyle is a good enough filmmaker that it was still incredibly effective.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Very happy they didn't wimp out and come up with a last minute miracle for the crew to survive.  I was very worried that once the Icarus 1 Captain showed up, he would conveniently off enough of the crew so that Rose Byrne and Cilliian Murphy would have enough O2 for the return voyage.

Anyways...crap ending after so much buildup.

It felt like they didn't know where to take the story, so they just slapped it on.  I thought it was mediocre overall.

I don't know if the plot twist made the movie completely fall apart, but it definitely wasn't necessary.

Other than that I quite liked it.

Agreed.

I liked the movie a lot (watched it today) and always long for movies like this just to stick with the main problem at hand not introduce some external force or variable that takes away from the whole film.

I'd give it a strong 3.5 overall.

Agreed. Two thirds of its way in, 'Sunshine' looks and feels like one of the best sci-fi movies of the decade. And then that plot twist comes in, turns the movie into just another slasher flick, almost throwing the whole thing into the dustbin. A shame.
