So, I got very little for Christmas this year. But my favorite gift was that someone in my family was intelligent enough to take advantage of the BestBuy deal and pickup Deadwood: Season One for me.
I have watched the first two episodes so far. It's extremely engaging. I'm glad I listened to the nudging of GT forum members again (like I did with Firefly). Unless the show takes a major shit between episode 3 and the end of the season, it was a fantastic thing to ask for.
So just like I did with the Firefly thread, I want to thank our awesome forum members (well, the ones that liked Deadwood that is) for the awesome recommendation.
You guys rock.

Unless the show takes a major shit between episode 3 and the end of the season, it was a fantastic thing to ask for. Nope. I found the show thoroughly engaging from first episode to last. The only disappointment is that it was cancelled. Like Carnivale, it was a masterful show that was cut down way too soon.

Solid series, but not one of the best that has been on cable or even on HBO. I thought the ending was a terrible disappointment and there were so many potential stories to be told. If only the 2 hr movie could have been made to bring closure.
'Swenjin' is one of the best villains ever portrayed on TV, imo.

Simply my favoritie show ever. HBO Cocksuckers, damn you for shorting this series. The equally ill cut short Rome & Sopranos are Deadwood's only near competition for me.

I didn't enjoy season 2 as much as the 1st, but 3 is decent. Still one of the best shows on TV IMO. Still really bitter for HBO not even giving us the movie.

We started watching this a couple weeks ago and have finished Season One and are through the first disc of Season 2. It's a great show. I especially love Calamity Jane, the Preacher and Sol Star.

I especially love Calamity Jane, the Preacher My favorite moment of the entire series involves the preacher. I think you'll probably know it when you see it. It's an amazing moment on that show.

Been trying to figure out what he meant too. There are some great moments and he is one of the most likable characters in the show, but I don't know what SL is referring to.

In any event, that episode and specifically that scene was the most memorable moment on a series that had quite a few of them, but on the whole wasn't, in my mind, as solid top to bottom as say The Wire or Sleeper Cell.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the spoiler tags. (No, that's not sarcasm. I actually DO appreciate it.)
As far as taking the episodes slow - I agree with you. But darn it's going to be hard as heck to do that!

I totally agree with you. It was a great scene in a great episode. I forgot to mention how much I like the doctor as well. Watching he and Jane interact is funny.

Deadwood rocks from beginning to end. Awesome show.
Too bad there really was no end. They wrapped up Season 3 with the understanding they would be doing a Season 4, but before they could come back and start working on it HBO changed their mind and dropped the axe on the show. So, another show I was following religiously that just... stopped rather than ending well.

One of my favorite dialouge exchanges ever caught on film occurs between Swearingen and Sol Starr in Episode 22 Spoiler for Hiden: When annexation became the big topic.... Al: Before his present troubles and whilst you pursued your preferred activities, your partner Bullock joined in a campaign to which I hope you will now subscribe.
Sol: What do you mean my “preferred activities”?
Al: Oh, a reference to your people’s penchant for money-gettin’. A poor attempt at wit.
Sol: I don’t find those funny.
Al: I apologize.
Sol: If you want my help, don’t insult me.
Al: Oh, Jesus Christ, show me the secret grip that proves my regret and let’s be about our fucking business. Will you salt Adams with expertise about Helena’s politics and Butte’s, to be taken by this cunt Commissioner as samplings of a vein of familiarity so rich, wide and deep as to leave this Commissioner in no doubt that Montana, stiff-pricked, courted Adams as Deadwood’s representative so strenuously towards annexation it forced him to flee, lest he say, “Yes, yes, take us now.” And yield the virtue of the camp on the spot?
Sol:Yeah, I’ll school him.So gutter-trash, so pointed, yet so elegant at the same time....love it.

Indeed. If Shakespeare had the linguistic style of a drunken sailor, surely Deadwood is what would have sprung from his pen.

Episodes 5 & 6 are in the books.
At this rate, I'm going to rip through season one in no time. There are certain scenes that just blow my mind, they are so different from anything else I've seen on television. Like when Jane is up in the hills and sees the guy they dumped out there. She is a FANTASTIC character.

This show and Mad Men had/have two of the most talented writing staffs I've ever encountered on television. Each line of dialog is/was like a carefully crafted piece of art with amazing depth.

Episodes 7,8,9, and 10 during my marathon session on New Year's Day.
I already feel an overwhelming sense of depression coming on when I hit the very last one.

One of the best hours of episodic television ever. Brad Dourif rocks ridiculously hard.

I loved the interactions between the Doc, Jewell and Al.
Speaking of Jewell... is she acting or is she really disabled in some way? If that's acting, she's amazing. If she's really disabled... that just as amazing.

Geri Jewell is an actor and comedian born with cerebral palsy. She is most famous for her roles on the television program The Facts of Life and on HBO's Deadwood.
