I haven't, and like ibdoomed said that's irrelevant. I know I wouldn't like getting my balls slammed in a car door, but I don't feel the need to subject myself to that to prove to myself I wouldn't like it.

I have no plans to see it period. It won't even get a Netflix rental from me that would cost next to nothing. If they come out with a real X-Men First Class movie then I'll see it, but this isn't that.

you seem remarkably close minded and stubborn about this.  Ridiculously so.

I concur. Let us begin with the ridicule!

Ceekay and Angel, sittin' in a tree..

CeeKay, I can slam your ridiculous argument in two words: Battlestar Galactica.

But I'll even elaborate.  Many fans were irked by some facet of the modern version's style of taking the source material and free-styling with it.  Starbuck, a girl??  FU, I'm never watching that shit.  But Starbuck kicked ass as a girl.  And if you kept your geek inflexibility from wavering, you'd never know that.

Also, where does the line end, CeeKay?  It seems like you'd want goofy yellow outfits; overwritten melodramatic dialogue; and actors with giant block heads, too.

Holy Cow have we finally found something that Ceekay is serious about? And such a world ending important topic too  icon_lol. Seriously, First Class may have royally screwed up the order in which characters became X-Men, but at least the movie took itself seriously and presented a kick ass story. It is by far the best X-men movie and it's the best super hero flick of the summer (so far, haven't seen Cap yet).

It does not win awards for special effects.
It does not win for body count.
It does not win for number of Xmen characters in the movie (3 gets this one, wooo!).

It has a really compelling story with fantastic period costumes, truly likable characters (including Magneto) and a delivery that is second to none.
They keep the plot holes to a minimum, and Bacon as Shaw was a truly fantastic villain.

CeeKay, (almost put CeeLame... that would have been Freudian) go see the damned movie.

I still prefer X-Men 2 over all the other films, but that's mostly because I felt Alan Cumming knocked it out of the park as Nightcrawler...my favorite x-man.  Plus, that opening scene...wow.

Still, first class is a great film I highly recommend to anyone who wants to make fun of Ceekay after viewing it.

I finally got around to seeing this yesterday. Damn it was a good movie. Solid in every respect, and I thought that James McAvoy really turned in a top-notch performance. So did Michael Fassbender for that matter. Best super-hero movie I've seen this year.

I understand not wanting to see it in theaters and all, but I can't understand the outright hatred for it. There are plenty of superhero movies that don't follow the comic book canon, yet you've watched them all. What gives?

Yup. Pathetic. Seriously, this is so far from 'balls in car door' it's not even funny. It's worth at least a rental for the brilliant portrayal of Magneto by Fassbender. But hey, go all 'Comic Book Guy', why don't you.

is it just because of who's in the film CK,as in not the original First Class in the comic books?,like Rick said, surely there has be bigger things in past superhero movies that have been more scandalous,i thought you may of been happy seen as though it more or less ignored Xmen Origins:Wolverine

as for Wolverine, there was talk he would be in First Class 2(or whatever they call it),but i think they are doing Wolverine 2 first

p.s.  i tease, i tease.  but i have to say, i think at this point your hatred of the movie probably increases in direct proportion to how many folks tell you you're wrong...at least now.  i have a feeling that after the taunting dies down and you've had to some time to let loose of the stubbornness that we've inspired in you, you'll find yourself watching it one night and think to yourself, "Hey, this is pretty damn good."...and then you'll hide the copy inside the case for Green Lantern so folks won't know.

I finally got around to seeing this this weekend. Maybe because it had been talked up so much, but I thought it was pretty meh. It just seemed to take a really long time to get going, and the first hour or so felt very choppy. It wasn't _bad_ per se, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as X1 and X2.

I just saw this tonight and I'd agree that it wasn't super impressive.  Some things were done pretty well, like the period costumes and such, but overall it left me frustrated.  I think the biggest problem for me comes back to the fact that it always seems like the stupid mutants could use their powers more effectively if they spared half a thought.

For instance, when Shaw/Schmidt first kills Erik/Magneto's mom so Erik rages and destroys a room and kills a couple guards, but then is just happy to have Shaw put his arm around him and doesn't even try to harm him.  He then dedicates the rest of his life to trying to kill him, instead of just taking the gun from him right then.  Or shoving the bell through his head.  Or crushing him with a table.  Or trying a single thing.

Or when Magneto was first chasing that sub and getting pulled along in the water, why didn't he just use his powers to screw up the propellers?  Or open the hatch?  Or ground the sub?  Or shove that bigass anchor through it.  Or just crush the whole damn thing and stop the movie right there.

And near the end of the movie when the the ships are getting ready to shoot at the beach, why didn't Charles once again just take control of the captain of the ship and stop the orders like he had done five minutes before?

Or in the end when Charles is watching Magneto get ready to shove the coin through that dude's head...the only reason Magneto could do that was because Charles had him in a mind-controlled trance!  Let him go for a second you fucktard. Or tell him to move.  Or anything other than letting your friend slowly shove a coin through his cranium.

And as usual I just didn't really buy any of the characters "going evil".  Neither of the girls really seemed to have a good reason for switching sides, and Mystique in particular had multiple reasons to stick with the "good guys".  Like maybe sticking around to see if her friend will survive getting shot in the back?

Also, all of these characters that are in the later X-Men movies are at least 70 or 80 years old?  I guess they all seemed to magically get the same mutation that makes them age very slowly.

Anyway, I just gave this movie more time and thought than it was worth...

This I agree with.  It probably wouldn't have worked but he should have done something.

As it's shown later in the movie Magneto really hadn't mastered his powers yet.  He was good with manipulating small things but large objects like the satellite dish proved a problem.

In the first encounter Charles had had a lot of time to seek the captain.  With his location changed and under stress of the situation it is believable that he wouldn't have been able to find him in time.

I think the basic idea is that only the two of them together could actually stop the guy.  If Charles broke his focus then he would have been able to absorb the force of the coin and probably use it break free and kill Magneto.

He had certainly mastered it enough to lift that giant chain and direct it and the anchor in a very precise attack on the boat only moments before.  It isn't like submarine propellers are giant objects, or the hatch, or rudders, or ballasts, a hundred other things that could disable it.  The whole damn thing is made of metal!

They certainly seemed to be taking their time when I was watching, and it wasn't like they were under no stress or time constraints a few minutes earlier when in the plane and he controlled the one Russian to fire the missile at their boat.

My point was that Charles wasn't powerless to do anything.  He had already shown that he could control other people, so he could have done any number of things to change the situation without allowing Shaw to gain the total upper hand.  Continuing to pause him and being complicit in the killing didn't make any sense at all.

Dangit, now you've made me waste even more time on this dumb movie...   disgust

I think the whole reason they didn't have him try to kill Shaw at the beginning was to avoid spoiling what Shaw's power was.  It works from a 'this is a movie' perspective, but it does kinda fail from a logic standpoint.  I think he obviously would have tried killing Shaw and then failed.

I finally caught X-Men: First Class on DVD on Sunday. Natch, I got yet another bad DVD (DVD manufacturing seems to get shoddier every year) with several scenes in the middle that won't play. I will try an exchange later.

So I saw maybe the first 3/5 of the movie and then last 1/5, something like that.

Cast-wise, I loved Bacon, McAvoy and Fassbender in their roles. The various young pup X-Men? Meh. While I love Jennifer Lawrence generally, it doesn't really feel like they needed an actress as good as her for Mystique. Ensembles are like that though, it's really tough to give everyone their space in this kind of thing. I think Whedon did that balancing act better in The Avengers.

And yeah, it's pretty "check your brain at the door" in terms of why they use powers a certain way in some situations and not in others. I mean even the idea that shoving a steel helmet on your head keeps Charles from reading your thoughts seems silly to me. At least unless your skull's made of lead or something.  icon_razz

I think it also suffers a bit from prequel-itis in that if you already know that Charles is going to get paralyzed somehow, and Mystique's going over to "the other side," and Magneto's going to be Misguided Evil etc., well, all the movie's doing is sort of hitting those marks and dropping the tumblers in place, so to speak. It's like the three less-loved Star Wars movies rotely falling into place. It kind of steals the opportunity to surprise the audience, imho.

I'm hoping Days of Future Past can bring back that feeling of surprise/discovery.
Spoiler for Hiden:
I loved the idea of Xavier and Magneto as allies, and would love to see a bit more of that.

What's odd about Mystique in this is she seems so close to Charles but in the later movies I don't get any sense of a former relationship between them at all. And of course she's written off in a finger snap in The Last Stand (once "unmutated"), like she's a cast extra or something.

Overall, I did still enjoy this and wish I'd caught it at least once in theaters in 2011. And yes, Wolverine's cameo -- three words summing up his attitude  icon_cool -- was probably the best moment in the movie.  icon_cool

I loved it,LOL

The thing is,i wasn't really expecting them to go down the road on how he got paralysed until perhaps a sequel(it wasn't in my mind at all)...not even sure what Days of Future Past will be

so wondering if a true sequel to First Class will have how he lost his hair icon_wink

The Continuity thing is a big of a pain in other movies
Wolverine Origins,Sabertooth(Victor Creed) is Wolverines Brother but in X-Men 1,we don't see any of that, they just fight

I read somewhere its because Sabertooth went Feral,so can not remember Wolverine, just like Wolverine can not remember Sabertooth being his brother Roll Eyes

and then again, this is all Movie Marvel..i have no idea how true all that is to Comic Book Marvel(the Canon)

and its going to become a bigger pain when i heard Bryan Singer is finding ways of fixing the errors of X-Men 3(the story was about Cyclops not being in Days of Future Past but may turn up in the future..Cyclops died in Xmen 3..as did Xavier)
