I can't say I've read a lot of them, but what would you guys say are the best videogame books / novels / graphic novels / art books etc?    I'd like to do an article on it, and I think the best way on this would be crowdsourced.  smile

I've read a bunch of Mass Effect books and a Dead Space book that ranged from meh to OK. I'd say the best one I've read is Ghosts of Ascalon, which is a Guild Wars 2 book.

Gears of War books by Karen Traviss.

This. Can't believe how good the book series really is. Fantastic all around. Gave it a shot when ATB recommended it, hope the rest of you give it a go.

Also the Halo trilogy (The Fall of Reach, The Flood, and First Strike) is pretty good.

I usually make a point of not reading video game novels. My TBR list of "real" books is so large that I don't have the time. That said I did enjoy the first Mass Effect novel and I do have the whole Republic Commando series by Karen Traviss to read. I also read a bunch of Doom books when I was in high school but I doubt they have aged well.  smile

I'd say the best one I've read is Ghosts of Ascalon, which is a Guild Wars 2 book.

+1 By far the best novel based on a video game that I've read to date. The next closest would be Dragon Age: The Calling followed by The Infernal City: An Elder Scrolls Novel.  I also liked the SW Republic Commando series too, but didn't find them quite the quality of those above 3.

Of course if I was allowed to include novels that a video game was based on, number one for sure would be the Witcher series on novels.

I've never really found myself drawn to books based on games.  I think at least partly because I assume they are mediocre at best, and partly because I rarely play games for the story so why would I want more of that.

Actually that's really not the case - at least for Fantasy and SciFi novels. One of the main reasons being that with digital media being much more dominant now, the traditional publishers are less willing to risk the cost of publishing anything for that genre. Whereas for many of the game companies (video and tabletop) novels are in a sense "icing on the cake" for their existing settings and intellectual properties. The game companies have far less to lose and they attract many good writers who are aware of that.

The Okami art book is excellent, as is Monster Hunter Illustrations.

There was an ICO novel that I rather enjoyed. It deviated quite a bit from the game however

I have a buddy that tried to get me to read the Gears of War novels.  He loved them.  While there was a video game I'm still partial to the Robotech novels
