Unlike Predator, Commando is terrible. Just terrible.

Ok, it starts strong with a lot of the 80s cliches (maybe the originator of many of them?) and has a lot of Arnold's prime one liners, but it quickly descends into unbelievable garbage.

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I had the badass poster of him posing up right after he put his gear on, but now it is just...wow.

On top if it, the acting is terrible...from almost everyone. Literally. Everyone.  I know Arnold is no Pacino, but he definitely got better as his career progressed. In this film, he's almost a caricature of himself.  Rae Dawn Chong is incredibly bad at emoting.  Even Vernon Wells who played perhaps the best bad guy ever in a movie <see Road Warrior> is not believable as the main antagonist- he looks more like an out of shape middle manager than a formerly elite soldier (and the chainmail just accentuates his paunch and love handles).

Bill Duke, as always, is terrific. And so is the hugely unappreciated David Patrick Kelly (guy should have been a superstar).  But the rest of the cast is mailing it in from start to finish.

Also, in the major setpiece of the movie, arnold kills the same guy with a moustache about 12 times and the guy with a beard about 6 times.Ugh.

I'm guessing this movie was always terrible, but now I understand that it is.

I saw an interview or documentary type thing about Commando a while back and they touched on the wardrobe issues with Wells. Turns out he was not the original bad guy - whomever they cast first quit and they had zero time for problems so they just hired him and he had to wear what was originally made for his predecessor.

ta da!

knowing is half the battle.

I never even got round to that movie when it was released in the 80s,i like Carl Weathers but for some reason that film never appealed to me...Carl Weathers should be in The Expendables

We need an 80's movie thread, because no matter how bad the movies are now, they ruled our childhood then(well,i'm 37 years old,So I don't know about you lot),and we can decide which movies are still great and which now suck(Predator and Commando can head the two categories)

Commando was never all that great to begin with but it has two things going for it:

1) The music, like most 80s action movies, rocked.

2) "I let him go". Easily one of the top 5 Arnold lines.

It also taught me how to escape an airplane that has just taken off. Assuming, of course, it's flying over a swamp...

Commando was always on the cheesy side compared to Predator.  My favorite is probably the quote that comes right before the one above - "remember when I said I was going to kill you last? I lied."

Try watching Cobra (Stallone). That movie is laughably bad.

I remember trying to watch that quite a number of years ago and couldn't do it. I basically stayed in until he said that line, resolved the situation that resulted in him saying it and hit eject.

Find a copy of Hercules lost in New York.  Its a great Arnold movie if you want a laugh.  The director didnt like his accent so they dubbed over all his lines.  I'm sure it seemed a good idea at the time but now that Arnold is one of the most recognized people on the planet it's funny to see him acting and hear someone else doing his voice.

Why the Nighthawks hate?  It wasn't great, but it sure as he'll wasn't Commando.

IIRC it was fairly generic for some of the talent involved.

I was very pleased to find this was not a discussion about not wearing underwear.

On that note. I never really cared for Commando but Predator is still one of my favorite movies.
