There are 5 classic bands to me that, I may not even LOVE but are timeless and have created music that has survived generations.. in no particular order.

Led Zeppelin
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Metallica
Queen

My nephews listen to these bands as if they are NEW and EXCITING.. I think that awesome, but it got me thinking how FEW bands have that longevity... WHat am I missing?

Van Halen - my cousin who is only 15 or so is a huge fan, particularly of the DLR years.

Chicago - while they have become a touring Chicago cover band in the past 10 years, they have a huge body of work that spans four decades.

Bon Jovi - yeah, you laugh.  But they've been at it for over 20 years, sold tens of millions of albums with many top 40 hits, and still manage to crank out catchy tunes without sounding dated or like they're trying too hard to be contemporary.  Just for example, tickets recently went on sale locally for a February show.  All of the seats are gone except for nosebleed and behind the stage.  And they went for over $100 a pop after service charges.  No one other than Springsteen or McCartney can reasonably ask those kind of ticket prices.

I'm just a young guy - 16 and I dont listen to music that comes out these days, I've dedicated my music listening, to going back in time to enjoy GOOD music.

They just dont make music like they used to.

I'm a guitar player and metal is the hardest genre you can learn on guitar, Black Sabbath and Metallica are the best metal bands, in my own opinion. And I like their music and play it all the time.

I love Pink Floyd, Toto, Loverboy, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, etc, etc.

I second CCR.  "Fortunate Son" reads like prophecy.

Nobody says Elvis?  Not that he is a 'band', though.

I'll also throw in Nirvana, and if Elvis counts, I'll throw in an Ozzy too.

I third CCR!  I think Bob Seger could easily be on the list.  Maybe Bob Dylan, I'm not a huge fan myself, but he was a pioneer in many respects... same with Hendrix, once again not the biggest fan.  I guess those 3 really arent bands, but they are classics.

-Forgot to say Steve Miller Band!

Well i have to say Fleetwood Mac,

Saw there reunion concert in the Uk last year and it was just superb, for me their music is timeless, my dad introdiced me to them when i was a wee nipper and i still remember buying their Tango in the Night album in 86 whne i was at school.

One thing for any older band is their ability to have people that don`t listen to their music to hear it round someone elses house and go wow who`s that and then i didn`t realise they did that song and they sound so good.

I`ve recruited loads of people to Fleetwood Mac, play their stuff at work or in the car etc etc.

CCR, Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Queen, Eagles(live version of Hotel Califonia is one of my all time fav songs)

+1 for The Who and Rush as well.

Darren, take a listen to The Who Live at Leeds. You will hear hard rock played the way it was meant to be.

I'm a huge Rush fan, but do I think they'll survive "all-time"? Not necessarily. Well, maybe if their loyal (re: rabid) fan base lives forever.

I think more accessible bands, like Boston, Foreigner, Bad Co., etc, would have more longevity because of songs like More Than a Feeling, Hot Blooded and Can't Get Enough of Your Love. Rush's most popular song, Tom Sawyer, is great and all, but to me, isn't great enough (straightforward) to hit it off with the remaining masses.

Hallelujah!

I introduced my wife's 15 year old cousin to Ween last year, and he is now, dare I say it, a bigger Ween fan than I am!   A couple of days ago I passed on my Mollusk Tour shirt on to him, as it didn't fit me anymore and I felt it was in good hands.

I just can't say enough good things about Ween.  I consistently listen to almost every one of their albums.
