No trolling.

And yea, I suppose REEAAAALLY old stuff would benefit, but most ~7-10 year old movies will probably not get a lot of 'treatment' on their film I'd guess.

24 and Prision Break - On Blu-Ray Q1 2007!

Yay, TV shows that suck ass and I could care less about.  To be honest 99% of the HD-DVD and Blu Ray selection do not interest me in the slightest.

 eek

I'm going to pretend that you just didn't say that about 24....    disgust

Aren't all old movies all kind of pointless on BR/HD-DVD? Are they ever going to look better than what they do on current DVD?

Not pointless at all.  Film has greater theoretical resolution than even HD.  Assuming that the negatives are still in good shape (which is a big if on some movies) or they have gone through a restoration, there is incredible detail in the original source that has yet to be revealed at 480p DVD resolution.

So this is going to save your 600 dollar Blue Ray player, oops I mean Game Console?  And I suppose the grand that you pay for the Blu-Ray player will not factor in either? Just because you loathe anything without the word Sony on it does not mean that you know the average consumer.

Come on, is that really needed, deadzone? If you would like to talk about this without throwing around nonsense like that, I would be glad to talk about it with you.

Your right, cheap shot, I apologize.  The fact is that I am pissed off at the Entertainment Industry for doing this.  I have to assume that they are not doing any of this in the interest of their customers based on their actions.  I mean, what is the big deal with cooperating with each other and coming up with one format standard?  It's not like they would not make money or anything if they just agreed on a single format!  Everybody would win if they did that.

None of the things that they are touting as new features really seem all that compelling - not to mention the fact that it's just so damned expensive.  I mean more storage capacity?  With the cheap price of a hard drive/external combination why would I choose enhanced dvd media to store stuff on when I know that it's going to not last as long?  Improved image quality?  I honestly doubt that there is much difference at all between my current up converting dvd player/30 inch ws professionally callibrated tv and a 50 inch tv with a blu-ray or hd-dvd player connected.  I mean I have seen blu-ray on a big tv and it just didn't seem all that different from what I currently have.

Personally, I would trust optical media to last longer than a hard drive.

What did I offend you somehow by insulting 24?  People praise the show like it is the second coming of Christ.  I can't stand it.  The first season was decent but it went downhill really fast after that.

Just a suggestion, but when someone says, "I like these shows!" how about instead of, "the shows you like suck ass, Jack Bauer sucks cock," you could try, "I don't get the fascination with 24, the show's highly overrated."

I originally stated pretty much that, then got the eyes of shock and awe from Hetz because I dare not like 24.

You also got a "no trolling" request from the site administrator which you followed up with "Jack sucks cock!"

Is it that hard to show a little restraint when it's obvious Ron is trying everything he can to eliminate the forum drama that's been going on recently?

You started off saying it sucked ass. I replied with a bit of humor and then you went off the deep end saying it sucked cock etc....it's just a TV show. No need to get bent out of shape about it

Now please, lets keep this civil, like I stated at the beginning of the thread. Is it really that hard to do?

Please?

I'm surprised they aren't touting all the Pixar movies on that list, those seem like they'd have some of the biggest wow-factor to show off blu-ray.  Disney is on blu-ray's side, right?  (I haven't been following the HD wars too closely)

Yep, Disney is Blu-Ray only. In fact they had a preview on the Cars DVD that showed a preview of the Disney releases coming to Blu-Ray this year. It included Pixar movies like Finding Nemo and Cars. Also movies like Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Chicken Little and Alladin among others.

Reposted and revised from the locked thread:

Hopefully there will be more separation and some studio shifts one way or the other.  Or the combo players start coming out at affordable prices.  Then again I'm still not sold that either of these formats will really take a foothold like DVDs.  I think on-demand downloadable content will be the next big, true format shift.  I realize there is a bandwidth issue, but I see these formats as crutches while they work out the issues with the downloads.  Unfortunately, once iTV comes out the lemmings will flock to the punch and I imagine Apple will have a stranglehold on the formats and players.

Well, the big news today is that Universal is not going to be making any title announcements for HD-DVD at CES.   :icon_confused:

There are a bunch of freakout threads right now over on AVS but I don't have the patience to sift through all the wailing and gnashing of teeth right now. Any news, jblank or anyone else?

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/CES/Universal/CES:_No_New_HD_DVD_Announcements_from_Universal/429

Quote
In a rather surprising move, primary HD DVD backer Universal Studios Home Entertainment confirmed today that they will be making no major title announcements at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, despite the formidable presence of all major studios supporting rival format Blu-ray.

Universal, the sole major Hollywood studio to be supporting HD DVD exclusively, was expected to bringing out its big guns for 2007 at CES -- or at least make enough new announcements to dazzle the early adopters who have been passionately backing the format thus far. But when we contacted Universal to find out if anything further is to come from the studio out of CES, they confirmed they will not be unveiling any new street dates or detailed title info at all for the duration of the show. The studio stressed that they continue to support HD DVD and are planning to announce new titles "throughout 2007."

We must say, it seems like a strange promotional strategy to arrive at CES with nothing to brag about, especially given the highly visible nature of the show in the mainstream media, and that Blu-ray's showing has been quite muscular.

Hetz - make sure you see the bottom of the 1st page of this thread.  I replied to you and also apologized for my snarky post towards you.  Just want to make sure you knew that.

The apology was something I needed to do, the incessant babbling that follows is like a bonus or something.   icon_biggrin  Feel free to ignore the babbling part as it's coming from a frustration that I am feeling towards the Entertainment Industry in general.   icon_cool  On the other hand, if you can actually make sense of my rantings then you or either a genius at understanding what people are trying to say or just crazy!   :icon_eek:

Oh yeah BTW:

Hetz and J-Blank - we should all three just hug this bitch out anyway as we do share common ground in the sense that we all love our HDTV that we have.

Apparently you two have a combination of cool wives and decent income!  I have decent income and a cool wife too but she will draw lines with me when it comes to how much I can spend on new toys.  She cut me off at about 3 grand with HDTV.   crybaby   I have new plans that I am drawing up though and these will have even more powerful persuasion arguments!   eek

Hey Deadzone -

Yeah, I saw your apology. Thank you for it.  icon_smile

I do realize that not everyone likes my posts and I am trying to tone down my over-the-top excitement so I don't get such strong reactions out of some people. I do have a bit of an 'root for the  underdog' mentality about me (must be the hardcore liberal in me  icon_wink) so I do apologize if I come off as a jerk when defending the current pile-on target of the moment. I hope you and everyone else on this forum realize that I don't harbor any ill will towards any of you and most of the time I don't take anything said here personally. Sometimes I do lose my cool, in the heat of the moment, but later I realize that I really should have just kept my mouth shut.

JBlank and I have resolved our differences for the most part via PM and I have nothing personal against the guy at all. We both just have strong opinions and we both can be very stubborn, I think. We are cool now.

*group hug*

Agreed on that one-just easier than worrying about fights about silly things like tv shows and movies and the like.

Well, only Warner and Paramount have announced any HD-DVD's so far and those are the same as the Blu-Ray's that they are releasing. Universal hasn't announced anything, which is the only exclusive studio for HD-DVD.

That is the reason that many people over at AVS are freaking out right now about HD-DVD and it's showing at CES. Disney, Sony, MGM, Lionsgate and Fox all came out with lots of exclusive new movies for Blu-Ray at CES while the only HD-DVD exclusive studio, Universal, didn't announce anything.

Here is some interesting news from Digital Bits:

Quote
Okay… now on to the news from Monday afternoon, the highlight of which was the Blu-ray Disc Association press conference. Pioneer's Andy Parsons moderated the panel, which featured the home video presidents of Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Warner and Disney. The group issued a promotional booklet at the event featuring the bold blue headline, "Blu-ray Victory Inevitable." Of the research the group presented, the most compelling data by far was a list of the Top 20 Selling DVDs of 2006… indicating that only 4 of the 20 would or could be released on HD-DVD, and only 1 was exclusive to HD-DVD (Universal's King Kong). But of the 20 titles, 19 of them would be available on Blu-ray and 16 of them would be exclusive to Blu-ray. The group cited research by analysis firm GFK indicating that Blu-ray had already won the high-def format war in Japan, with more than 96% dominance of the market. They also reiterated the announcement that Sony had shipped 1 million Blu-ray equipped PS3s to U.S. retailers as of 12/31 (my guess is that they were shipped RIGHT at the end of 2006, in the very last few days of December), and that their survey of 10,000 PS3 owners indicated that 80% planned to purchase Blu-ray movies (after seeing the copy of Talladega Nights  included in the package) and that 75% of them planned to use the PS3 as their primary movie viewing device. At an "intend to purchase" rate of 80%, the group calculates an installed base of Blu-ray players in the U.S. of more than 800,000 in the next few weeks alone (provided the million PS3s sell through quickly, which remains to be seen). They also indicated that Blu-ray software sales surpassed HD-DVD sales in December, with a strong surge coinciding with the PS3's November launch (a 700% increase since mid-November), and that they project Blu-ray software sales to outpace HD-DVD sales by a factor of 2 or even 3 to 1 in the first half of 2007.

Wow. As you can see having all those studios exclusive to one format is really going to be paying big dividends in the end.

While I am surprised Universal is being shy about further announcements at CES, lets remember they did reveal many of their releases already:

any further word on the combo players?  I'm really torn as Blu-Ray has the Disney movies coming out while HD DVD is going to have the Harry Potter series.  I hate using my consoles as DVD players (I've never watched a DVD on my PS2 or 360 but the PS3 may change that) so a combo player would be great.

I think I just felt my wallet try to run away.  I figured it's be in the 1000-1500 buck range (was hoping for sub $1000 though).  I think I'll wait about a year and let both libraries build up a bit.

Just so you know, Blu-Ray is also going to have the Harry Potter series this year. It's a Warner movie and they release for both formats. In fact, they already announced it for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD this week.

It's on the list of upcoming Blu-Ray releases for this year, that I posted up above.

Speaking of Warner:

Warner Officially Announces Total Hi Def Hybrid Disc

Quote
Warner Home Video's press conference concerning the Total Hi Def disc that has HD DVD and Blu-ray all on one disc is currently ongoing, and it stated that the discs are able to contain dual layers of both HD DVD and Blu-ray on one disc. The first Total Hi Def releases will hit in the second half of this year, but no specific titles have yet been announced. At the conference, Warner used a copy of Superman to show off how it worked in an HD DVD player, Blu-ray player, and the recently announced LG Super Multi player that plays either. Finally, Warner claims it will not cost "materially" more than a regular disc. At the conference, already an exec from Best Buy has come out in support of the format, but whether or not other studios would ever pick up on Total HD releases is still unknown, although Warner claims they would not have to pay any licensing fees to Warner for using it.

Awesome.

Is paramount doing BluRay as well? All the star treks being hd-dvd only would be a huge thing for me, but blu-ray looks much better overall to me right now.

Yep, they are releasing on Blu-Ray as well.  The only studio that isn't releasing on Blu-Ray is Universal. While Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures and MGM are all Blu-Ray only. Warner, New Line (which is part of Warner Bros.) and Paramount are format neutral, which means they will release on both.

Ok I am pretty much convinced. Absent any information that would make me believe that HDDVD is going to win the war I am going to wait till I can truly afford the PS3 and enjoy Blu-Ray (I have the money to buy it now, but it would not be financially responsible  crybaby) Star Trek was a HUGE thing. What about Star Wars ooc?

No word on Star Wars I believe.  20th Century Fox is the distributor and they are in Bluray's camp, but Lucas controls when it comes out and I expect he will wait for a while to build up in install base.

Would they hurry up and have a winner please.  Part of me is wanting the HD DVD add on for the 360; but then I pause and think that $200 would go a long ways towards a PS3 (Calvin, seemingly similar to your dilemma).  So, I sit and wait for now...
