Don't these people learn how to talk or realize how stupid they look?  Disappointed with CNN pandering to this kind of crap.
Perhaps it was this "axing" that caused them to call the cops.  I'm pretty sure I'd be dialling 911 if someone axed me.

No, jpinard, black people do not learn how to talk nor do they realize how stupid they look.

I don't mean to turn this into a racial issue. Hell I'm a conservative-leaner who thinks race is brought up way too often. But I have to say that it makes me more than a bit uncomfortable when a bunch of what are probably all white guys mock a black girl as an uneducated slut.

I wonder what happened at Proms back in the late 60s and early 70s when fashion and mores became sexually liberated? There had to be some girl who wore a mini skirt and went through the whole how could they think this was inappropriate. I think that girl has self esteem problems thinking that she deserved to go to prom in that Princess Leia Desert Dancer Dress. icon_lol

Actually, I see nothing wrong with the dress. Hell, women on runways wear stuff like that, and as it goes she doesn't need to wear undergarments... she's an A cup and her dress offers support.

This wasn't her showing up to school; this was her going to a prom. It's a dress-up event and it was less revealing than a one-piece bathing suit, and certainly not dressed like any whores I've seen. If she was comfortable with it, then she should be able to wear it. Prom night is all about making your own poor decisions.

Oh, and she's graduated high school; that does not an uneducated slut make.

If they were that concerned they could have given her the option to go home and change, or just let it go. Her friends tried to cover her up and that wasn't good enough. Seems to me like there's a dirty principal who was pissed that she was NOT a slut.

FTR: she is hotter than most of the Next Top Model girls. Who knew?

You don't know if she's uneducated or a slut. You might have an idea, but you don't know her life and what issues she has faced. And, newsflash, she is a black girl - you are therefore, inescapably, mocking a black girl as an uneducated slut. And be honest here, would you call her an uneducated slut to her face? She's a high school girl for crying out loud. Guess you're only a bleeding-heart liberal when it's convenient for you.

Who said I'm a bleeding heart liberal?  I never did.   icon_biggrin

I don't care about her issues, her skin color (though you seem to) or her life.  Her command of the language is atrocious, her reasoning unsound and her reaction illogical (remember, she knew there was a dress code).  As such, I have enough data to make an initial assessment that she's uneducated (or just stupid).  And the dress makes her look like a cheap $2 hooker.  So I have enough data to make an initial assessment that she's a slut.  If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck...

I'm not going to defend the rest of the girl's decisions or reasoning, but again calling her stupid because of the way she talks is no different than judging someone to have low intelligence because they have a Southern accent or because they're a foreign speaker and omit definite and indefinite articles.  I wouldn't be surprised if the valedictorian in her school says "axed."

okay. finally tracked down the video..and seriously? Come on people, what the heck is wrong with that dress? Its nice, its probably expensive, and actually looks kinda like what your hollywood stars could show up in for a fine evening at some premier show...

As for her being not very real about what happened, "She knew there was a dress code" well..she's friggin' 17 for gods sake!! She's a kid, and allowed to make mistakes! hell, I was the stupidest kid when I was 17 - thank god I wasnt called an uneducated dolt for it, but people helped me on instead of slapping on a pair of handcuffs..

I'm sorry to say this, but sometimes a lot of people in the US seems very puritan in their thoughts..which is strange considering what else is going on there.

She's a 17 year old girl who wanted to look good and dress up for her prom night...thats it!

I can't tell whether you're being sarcastic or whether you didn't watch the video.

1.  The dress was homemade - a fact you would have gleaned if you watched the video.

2.  According to the Madison High School prom 2008 guidelines, only one inch of an attendants' midsection was permitted to be shown and slits in dresses could be no more than three inches above the knee.  Students planning to attend the function were required to sign the guideline document and return it to their homeroom teacher.  If students did not sign the guidelines and adhere to the dress code, they would not be allowed to attend the prom.  So she knew the rules and chose to *clearly* break them.  This isn't a case where she was showing 1.25 inches of her midsection.  This is a case where her dress was clearly against the rules in multiple ways - rules she knew and agreed to abide by prior to the event.  It would have been the same if an 18 year old showed up smoking a cig - it's not illegal, but it's against the rules.

3.  Then she became aggressive, loud and belligerent and eventually police were called to escort her from the building when she refused to leave.  How else were chaparones supposed to handle it?  She was aggressive to the police and put in handcuffs until she calmed down in a squad car.  Note that she was NOT arrested.

Frankly, the whole thing can be summed up with "dumb bitch breaks rules, causes scene and sent home".

So, according to this, she doesn't have to follow the rules like everyone else just because she's 17?  What about all the other students that did?  Is that fair to them?  This has nothing to do with this being the US or some other country.  Like Blackadar stated, she knew the rules well beforehand and chose to ignore them.  It's her own stupid fault for not being allowed to enter.

And calling the police was the smart thing so that her scene would not have possibly escalated to violence.  Things like this sadly, but often do.

She wasn't arrested for the dress, she was arrested for her behavior when told the adults in charge of the event didn't think it was an appropriate dress.  She got upset and someone called the cops, presumably because her behavior was out of control.  The cops probably cuffed her because she refused to leave (acting as if the prom was a right, not a privelege).  She wasn't even charged.

Edit: Blackadar's post really covers everything pretty well.

just watched the video quickly, wouldnt say so otherwise...

Anyways, what I mean by her being 17 is she's pretty much allowed to do stupid things without being judged as an ignorant wench/slut whatever people choose to call her...

As for the guidelines - very well, so be it - I still dont see the big deal, I must admit...

Why is things like this on CNN? Moral outrage? In what direction? at the state of the nation and the youngsters? Because the police were called to a prom? I mean, whats the spin for it to appear on CNN? I would have judged this to be local news..

and about being fair to the other students? What does that have to do with anything? headline of the OP was "Can you believe this prom dress"  I believe thats the issue here, right? well, I can believe it, and cant really believe its forbidden...as I said, puritan thinking in my eyes... Young people today are body centered...you can see this by watching the shows being run on TV...Paradise Hotel for instance.. Thus - its the way they promote themselves, and thats exactly what she did.

As for the police being called, well, I do have some experience with handling people and rejecting them at parties, and have only once being forced to call law enforcement...most people respond nicely to reason and polite denial if you have a little bit of training to handle it...

again, I just feel the whole thing is blown out of proportion...but maybe I just dont get it...

Dumb = Knew the rules for attire and deliberately broke them, expecting to get away with it.
Bitch = When confronted with the fact of her dumbness and denied entrance, rather than walk away gracefully she threw a fit worthy enough for someone to have called the cops.
Slut = Not enough information, but Blackadar has been two for two so far so we may have to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. icon_lol

Heh if you knew my track record from OO you'd know I'm one of the more outspoken people against any attempt at political correctness. I'm not saying you should never call a woman dumb or a bitch or a slut. I think it's probably in poor taste to do so with a girl who's not even out of high school yet, but I'm sure there are times when I would use those words. I just think you are awfully insulting of a young woman, a high school student, whom you do not know.

Agreed. The news station could have saved us all the trouble by doing an internet search on the prom dress guidelines, asking her if she signed the form and returned it, and then telling her "Damn girl, you broke the rules, of COURSE you aren't going to the prom! We don't need to axe you any more questions!"

So let me get this straight; she signed an agreement involving the rules regarding dress code for the prom, she showed up in a dress that looks to have broken every rule possible, refused to leave when the chaperones asked, and then got mouthy and loud with the cops and continued to refuse to leave when asked by the police?

Why is anyone defending her again? Last I checked around here refusing to leave somewhere after being asked by both the workers there and then the police generally ended with the belligerent party in jail for the night, not a brief period spent sitting in a cruiser cooling off and then a trip home.

She got off easy.

No one's really defending her. My position is that people are too harsh and judgemental about her, and that it's inappropriate and poor-mannered to use such words as "bitch" and "slut" when referring to a high school girl.

Point taken on you not defending her. Gotcha, misread posts, etc.

That said, it sounds like she was being a stupid bitch to me too actually. I don't think her age makes the description itself any less apt.

If I had tried to wear something inappropriate to prom and gotten myself kicked out and then in an altercation with the police I'd say "stupid bastard" would have been pretty much the perfect description.

And this post can be summed up with, "Blackadar: disrespectful to women." I mean, where do you get off calling a 17 year old girl a dumb bitch and a slut? She's just a high school girl for crying out loud. Disagree with her all you want, but to be so disrespectful of a young woman like that... didn't your parents teach you to respect women?

I mean really. It seems like you're just manufacturing outrage now...

I dunno, guess I just come from a place where you don't use words like "bitch" and "slut" for high school girls, or to women in general unless they really deserve it. Call me old-fashioned.

I too come from a place where you shouldn't use words like 'bitch" or "slut".  However, her actions clearly fall into the bitch category; breaking the dress code which she agreed to follow with her signature.  I wouldn't call her a slut, but the dress was defiantly slutty.

I just have to giggle at the "she signed an agreement!" protests in the thread.  I know our board's demographic skews toward the older side but you guys sound like a bunch of old fuddy duddies in this thread, completely out of touch with what high school was like. slywink

(Kids these days still say "fuddy duddy," right?)

Yeah if people in here were just calling her a bitch I wouldn't mind so much - not something I would probably do to a high school girl who did what she did, but not a biggie to me at all. It's the calling her a dumb slut and the piling on as well as the seeming need for some to degrade her and complain about those she represents that got me thinking people should probably sit back and get some perspective.

Lol, I know what you mean, though I'm 35 so I'm probably older than a lot of people in this thread. Still, I remember having to sign some pledge of abstinence in high school (or was it church?) when I was like 16. That night I got with a girl I had been heavily flirting with, gave her the signed pledge and asked her if she wanted to break some rules. It was like the perfect opener. Bow chicka wow wow.
