If my calculations are correct, that's just over a third of what we pay in the UK.  I know, I know, it's what you get used to.  But petrol has become so expensive here that it's actually become a factor in deciding where we go and how often.

Our government's constantly telling us to use public transport and stop relying on our cars.  Well, chew on these examples of how unsuitable public transport is.  The last place we lived, my girlfriend had to drive half an hour to get to work.  If she'd taken the bus (no rail link), it would have taken almost FOUR HOURS.  That's taking several buses and getting up at silly o'clock (getting home around that time too).

Or take where we live now.  To get to the next large town it takes almost two hours on the only bus.  It's a twenty minute car journey.

It's not like neither of those can technically be done, it's just that it would take so much time out of our already long days that we'd be doing bugger all else.  If the government thinks we're going to use public transport, they can kiss my fucking arse.

kratz's reason for posting isn't that the price seems high to him, it's that the price is crazy low compared to what we've been seeing--by about half.

Right now the US average is $3.70/gallon for 87 octane (Do they calculate octane the same in the UK?)

Are you sure about that and are you not perhaps thinking in litres? The price Kratz listed is almost 1/3 of the price I pay in my Canadian city, so if gas is indeed that cheap in the UK I for one am very surprised.

Oh, I didn't realise he meant that was cheap.  Yeah, ours is measured in litres and currently it costs about £1.12 per litre.  That's really bloody expensive.  It costs just over £40 to fill our car at the moment.  This time last year it cost £30.

huw, it's the same thing here.  i once took public transport to visit my dad (about 25 miles away).  nearest bus stop was a 20 minute walk from the house.  i already knew the schedule, so i planned it to give myself ~15 minutes before the bus was expected.  bus was at least 15 minutes behind, so i had a wait.  because it was so far behind, i missed the first transfer.  next bus was 45 minutes after.  that bus was also late, so i missed the next transfer (i saw that bus leaving as we arrived).  add almost 60 minutes. of course, that bus was also late so i got another 45 minutes to wait at the next one.  cap it all off with a short walk to his home, and it took hours to get there instead of a 35 minute drive.  

that was the last time i took a bus anywhere longer than the bus' direct route.  you can't rely on them to run on time, and inevitably, you end up waiting more than riding.

I know gas is going up due to Ike (it shot up 40 cents a gallon today), but I'm not sure freaking the fuck out, depleting gas supplies, and waiting in line for hours is the right way to handle the impending hike. At some point I think you wind up like Chicken Little and bringing about your own worst case scenario.

Which is obviously completely bullshit.  There's no way that a hurricane in the ocean right now should affect gas prices RIGHT NOW, since that gas was created 3 months ago.

Heh, thanks Wonderpug.  Yeah, and we have to fill up an average of once a week, so that's £160 or roughly $320 a month spent on petrol (or gas ).  That's just so we can get to work and back, never mind visiting friends and family and, I dunno, taking our daughter to the park on weekends etc.

My wife works for a very large Gas transportation company and she called me this morning telling me that the CEO of the company sent out an email to the entire company today telling them to fill up at lunch time because prices are going up. He blamed it on Ike, but apparently the company was told not to deliver any more gas to stations today (which is extremely abnormal). This company is located in Ohio, but delivers all over the US.

Nice. My 10-gallon tank lasts me 4-6 weeks, so 50 cents a gallon one way or the other is beneath notice. A half-price sale would get my attention, though.

I own a Jetta TDI (turbo diesel). During the summer diesel peaked at $5.19/gal. I nearly shit myself. I realize Europe has been paying that much or more for years, but it's still quite a shock to the system, and wallet, especially since at this time last year diesel was a full $2 less. I've since started carpooling with a co-worker, and therefore have to fill up less often. Diesel is still up there at $4.70 or so on average. It's rather sickening when you realize just how bad our dependency on oil is...and that every single thing you own is somehow related to oil, whether it was in manufacturing or simply its transport to the store. very depressing.

Just checked the Commodities market close, Gasoline closed at $2.77 then add your respective taxes and a small up charge and no one should really be paying over $3.60 or so for gasoline. Hell freaking Crude only finished the day at 101.18 that's about 7 dollars less than it was a week ago. The exchange will be opening electronic trading early on Sunday so go check your favorite finance page and look at the commodities. You'd have to be silly to fill up this weekend because of the fear mongering, Gustav rolled right over the oil fields and did nothing, Ike was mainly south of the major oil fields, but he's hugenormous and stronger than I think Gustav was. Either way Gas Stations are only exploiting the fact there is a bad storm in the gulf and I doubt we'll see any real damage their. Hell Nat Gas suffers more from gulf storms than regular gasoline does.

I swear we need some kind of regulation to prevent the bullshit like this.
