wow... there are so many ways they could fuck this up.  I'm not even sure they could do it properly on something like the CW.....

[edit 12-16-2013] OK, now maybe just a movie?

If Neil is involved, I have some hope it won't suck.  I wouldn't put it past the cw to go all out to mold it into their own image though.

I'll agree that long Sopranos type tv series is the only way to go with Sandman, but I just can't see it working without:

1) Lots of CGI
2) Lots of violence
3) Being anywhere but a cable station that will go R, like HBO or SHO

actually, the pacing and nerd factor, I really can't see it working outside of the written media (comics and short stories)

Now, how about a Calvin and Hobbs sitcom with a CGI tiger?

I'm also scared about them screwing it up.  However, Supernatural is one of my favorite shows, so it's not like CW is incapable of producing good stuff.  But I'm guessing that the budget that they'd need to do this right would exceed the potential audience draw.

Kripke has done a great job with Supernatural.  If they are going with someone established in TV, then I think that he's an excellent choice. Of course any film conversion from a a storyline like this is going to have its pitfalls.  Hopefully they will get Gaiman on board as a consultant so he can help keep the story's continuity together.

Not looking forward to a Sandman movie, I always thought that the format seems a better fit for Television.  I'll watch it, of course. smile

I almost have an Alan Moore atitude about it, no matter how the movie goes, the original survives untouched. biggrin.   I feel dirty now, agreeing with Alan Moore.

I think it could work as a movie as long as they committed to a series of at least three to do the material justice.
As far as the book vs movie thing,  I learned long ago not to expect a faithful reproduction of ANY book when put on film.  Books require so much more of our internal theatre and movies, even when true to the source material in a major way, can never live up to that.  Things will always be visualized differently in your mind.  All i hope for with a conversion is that it works with the basics, that its done well and that it entertains.   I find I enjoy these things far more if I dont even try to hold them up to the standards of the source material.  You are almost always setting yourself up for disappointment if you do.

I hope Hollywood never makes a 'Sandman' film or tv show. 'Sandman' was always 'alternative' and 'indie'. They should just give some talented young buck director a limited budget--let's say 5 mill--and just say to him (or her)..'Do whatever the fuck you want with it'. I'll bet you we'll get a kickass Sandman film that way.

Guillermo del Toro or go home.

EDIT:  And it looks like JGL is confirmed...as a producer.  However, the rumor is that he will star and may even direct.

I like the kid, and I'm certain there are many worse choices, but, no.

Joseph Gordon Levitt. He's one of the most talented younger actors of his generation. I heard he did a pretty good job with his directorial debut, 'Don John'.
