Over Thanksgiving my Mom made me do the "clear out your closet" crap.  I found some pretty cool stuff but one thing in particular hit me:  The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.  I remember reading that book a few years back and I really enjoyed it.  It was around the same time that Outbreak, that movie with Dustin Hoffman came out.  Anyone else read this book?  I was kinda curious about similar books or movies along that line?  The only I could think of was 12 Monkeys, but its not really the same?

Preston followed that book up with several fiction novels with similar subject matter.  I tried to read the first one (can't recall the name) but it didn't grab me.

Which ones did you try to read KG?  I saw that he has Cobra Event, The Demon in The Freezer?  And then I guess a few others?  When did you read the Hot ZOne?  When I saw it I almost thought about reading it again.

Andromeda Strain, hah, I read that back when I was in High School.  Early High School too.  Didn't they make a movie out of that one?

There's an interesting story about Outbreak... there was an actual Hot Zone movie in development, but Outbreak basically "scooped" it by being rushed into production first.

That was back in the 90s when Outbreak's producer, Arnold Kopelson, was still at the top of his game.  His company (where I interned for a bit) has declined in recent years.

Try his brother. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child cowrote a thriller cery much along the same lines called "Mount Dragon".  It's a good read but other thrillers by the same writng pair are far better so I recommend those as well. smile

Bluefugue - I heard about that and I was actually very surprised.  Because Hot Zone was a great book and I think it would have done well as a movie.  I mean I guess they were scooped but its not like two similar movies have never come out at the same time.  A shame...

I am also just surprised that post 9/11, nothing about this topic was made.  I was talking with a friend this weekend and he told me about something called Small Pox on fX thats coming up in a while.  I am about to go check out the web site.

"Mount Dragon", okay, lemme go run by amazon and check in on that, thanx for the recommendation Gryndyl.
