I've been teaching myself electric guitar for a few months and I'm needing to take it on a flight in a couple weeks.
For those experienced, do you use a case and check it or what's the best way to travel with it. I'm concerned I check it and when I pick it up at baggage claim its damaged.
I don't have a case yet either so I'll take advice on that too. Its a BC Rich warlock, rather inexpensive, paid $200 for it a few months ago.

You will have to check it based on size. You'll definitely need a hard case. Just assume it's being thrown and kicked around when you're buying your case. If it were a seriously expensive guitar, I'd ship it UPS/FedEx to your destination instead.

If you take it on a plane, make sure to loosen the strings because they react to the change in pressure.

You might be able to get the airline to let you stow it in the coat closet... call your airline and check.

I'm wondering if it would be better to take it to my local shop and have them box it up securely and have them ship it for me?

Is this just a one time thing or do you see yourself flying with your guitar more times in the coming years?

Get a window seat and start writing lyrics. Because you never know.

More flying. The deal is that I'm taking a 3 month work assignment in Hawaii that might turn into a year on different islands in Hawaii so potentially numerous flights.

I don't believe this is possible any longer due to TSA regulations. Hooray. Yeah, just don't fly United I'd say that's a given, guitar or otherwise. United loves me, and I love them. I don't understand why you peasants have issues.

If it's a bolt on neck (2 bills, it should be), take the neck off, box it up and you should be able to carry it on the plane and stow it in the overhead bin.
