I was watching Narnia (1st one) on the tv tonight, and, I really like it still, so many great scenes. Now, the end, the great battle, was a bit meh, but the queen! Now there's a real fighter, dualwielding swords with the best of them. I still wonder if she's had any real training, or its just posing.

This got me thinking about great swordsfights in movies, and this is certainly one of my favorites.

Another is Rutger Hauer in Ladyhawke, at the end, where the point of view is through the visor in his helmet, where he just casually brushes the normal goonknigts aside, and when the main villain comes along, twohanded sword fighting ensues! sooo cool, they can barely control the swords, and are really just hacking at each other, but it looks damn real.

So, whats the best swordfight you've seen in a movie?

I really like the fight between Arthur and Lancelot in Excalibur.  It's not that it's the best choreography, but rather how the tone of the fight changes from a contest to a fight to the death.

While it's not necessarily a sword fight, per se, it falls into the right category, and even though it's in a movie of questionable quality, when I first saw Phantom Menace I was quite impressed with the Duel of the Fates lightsaber duel between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jin, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.  It was like nothing I had ever seen before in a Star Wars film.  The Anakin/Obi-Wan duel at the end of Episode III was also impressive, but still didn't have quite the same impact.  To this day I consider the Duel of Fates to be one of the best sword/lightsaber battles of all-time.

While it has been quite some time since I've seen the film, I hear that the sword fight in Rob Roy is also one of the best sword fights ever depicted.  I'll have to check it out.

i was also thinking of Dual of the fates from The Phantom Menace

for real swords i quite liked Aragorn Versus Lurtz in LOTR1:Fellowship,especially when Lurtz took out the elvish knife from his leg and threw it at Aragorn and Aragorn hit it away with his Sword...that whole fight(not just Aragorn and Lurtz) starting from the top of the hill was pretty damn good, and the camera swoop looking down is really cool as well

its a very quick fight, but still cool nonetheless

Without a doubt one of the, if not the, best sword fights ever on film. Love the part in that scene where Liam Neeson, almost down for the count, grabs hold of a very indignant and shocked Tim Roth's saber then cleaves his chest open. I remember seeing it in the theater and people almost jumped out of their seats cheering!

I don't know about one of the best ever depicted, but it's definitely good and it is a good deal more believable than a lot of on screen swordfights we've seen over the years. It's the classic "self taught brawler vs professionally taught master" thing, and combines that with differences in size of the fighters. Neeson is huge compared to the other guy, but not nearly as fast.

It's a bit of a slow movie though, and Jessica Lang is... well I've never been a fan. Still a mostly good movie anyway. You should check it out.

I loved the sword fighting in Master & Commander. The way it was done showed how frantic the action was, the way you couldn't follow everyone or everything.

Obi-Wan vs. Anakin in Episode III did it for me. I tend to ignore the other two prequels and consider Ep III pretty much the entire series in one film, which works just fine IMO. Obi-Wan is on defense the entire time as Anakin continually attacks, which is exactly as it should be. The music for that sequence just blows me away too. It's so far beyond over the top that it hits that certain spot in my brain that revels in literally everything being hurled at the screen at once. And while I don't think it is, by comparison, as great a fight in terms of choreography, the final battle between Luke and Darth Vader is magnificent. Not as good as their fight under Cloud City, but still great. Yes, the Qui-Gonn vs. Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan sequence in Ep I has many moments of sheer geek bliss. It has better moves, but I think the emotions of the other fights lend more weight to the battles.

But go back far enough and the Errol Flynn vs. Basil Rathbone fight at the end of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" is freaking awesome. And I hate "Rob Roy" so very much I couldn't even enjoy the fight at the end. Jessica Lange can die anytime now and I'd be way happy.

While I do love the Princess Bride swordfights, as far as I am concerned you just can't beat the swordfights from the Richard Lester Three and Four Musketeers.  The fight in the courtyard, the fight on the ice, the fight in the laundry...all superb.  But my favorite is the climactic swordfight between D'Artagnan and Rochefort at the convent.  It was such a brutal, realistic fight.

Matter of fact, I think I'm going to pop in the Four Musketeers and watch that before bed...

Is it bad that I'm recalling a scene in the dark between two dudes (possibly John Ritter was one of them).  It involved glow in the dark condoms...

The Duel of the Fates battle was great. Darth Maul is the coolest sith ever. He's played by Ray Parks, and you should check out his YouTube vids to see some great sword/staff work. He works with some star wars nerds and actually makes a decent looking little fight out of it, heh.

Some of the best sword work I've seen was on TV, though, in Highlander, the TV series.

My personal favorite.  Based on an actual event (I forget the historical swordsman's name, but the two events are nearly identical).  This is, more than almost any other sword fight I've seen on film, the essence of what Japanese swordsmanship is all about.
